Abstract

Abstract: Pregnancy is a normal phase in the female reproductive cycle. Many women enter this physiological state with regular aerobic and strength-conditioning activities already a part of their daily lives; while others see pregnancy as an ideal time for positive lifestyle and behavioural modifications, including increasing physical activity and eating a healthier diet. In the modern world, pregnancy is no longer considered a condition for confinement. In the absence of medical and obstetrical complications, healthy pregnant women without any contraindications to exercise should be encouraged to continue and maintain an active lifestyle during their pregnancies. Combining regular exercise and pregnancy appears to benefit both mother and baby in many ways, both during the pregnancy and post-delivery. However, to safely administer an exercise test and develop a sound exercise prescription, maternal anatomic and physiological adaptations to pregnancy must be considered. Some modifications in exercise routines or activity patterns may also be necessary because of the normal changes in pregnancy and foetal requirements.
