Abstract

The issue of regional head elections is an interesting debatable phenomenon. The five-year political agenda has such a tremendous enchanting power. The main issues addressed in this paper were 1) how the local press constructed local political discourse, particularly in terms of local elections in Central Sulawesi through the practice of journalism; 2) whether local press ownership and political affiliation affected the political discourse construction in Central Sulawesi; and 3) how economic, political, and ideological powers controlled the local political discourse construction in Central Sulawesi. This study employed a critical approach using a qualitative method. The discourse analysis in this approach emphasized power constellation, which occurred in meaning production and reproduction. Results revealed that the local press utilized its control to create a new local politic discourse within local election dynamics, which was basically aimed at reinforcement of political support, including economic power. In summary, this could mean that media ownership, particularly if owned by politicians, will lead to such news of several sensitive political issues, usually controlled by specific ruling groups.
