The Correlation Between Handgrip Muscle Endurance and Hand Dexterity in Cigarette Factory Employees

Abstract

Hand rolling in the cigarette factory by hand roller employees requires muscle endurance and dexterity of the hand to be able to perform this activity with rapid repetitive movement in a long time. The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between handgrip muscle endurance and hand dexterity in cigarette factory employees of hand rolling division. This study is using cross sectional design. The subjects are cigarette factory employees of hand rolling division. Handgrip muscle endurance assessed by measuring fatigue index and relative endurance level using JAMAR digital handgrip dynamometer. Hand dexterity assessed by using Box and Block Test (BBT) and Minnesota Manual Dexterity Test (MMDT - placing test and turning test). The result of this study showed no correlation between fatigue index with BBT, placing test and turning test. Age showed a significant correlation with placing test. Period of work showed a significant correlation with fatigue index, box and block test and turning test. In conclusion, no direct correlation between handgrip muscle endurance with hand dexterity. But there is a correlation between the period of work with fatigue index and there are correlation between age and period of work with hand dexterity of cigarette factory employees of hand rolling division.
