Abstract

Functional mobility is impaired in elderly women. Improving functional mobility is crucial for not only activities of daily living but also preventing serious injuries due to falls in elderly people. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of line dancing on the functional mobility in elderly women. Forty-eight elderly women were enrolled in the study. The subjects were allocated consecutively into two groups. Subjects in the intervention group were given line dancing while the control group did activities of daily living. Functional mobility was assessed by the five times sit to stand (FTSTS) test and gait speed (GS) test. Subjects were reevaluated after a six-week line dancing program. A significant improvement in the FTSTS and GS were obtained in the intervention group. The difference of the two groups showed a statistically significant improvement in the FTSTS and GS tests. In conclusion, line dancing has a beneficial effect in elderly women to improve functional mobility.
