Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a non-communicable disease and a public health problem because it is ranked 4th in the world. COPD patients often experience weight of loss about 15-40% due to reduced muscle mass and body fat loss due to less nutritional intake from mild to severe COPD. The purpose of this research is to know the correlation between degree of COPD and risk of malnutrition in COPD patient in Lung Polyclinic of Meuraxsa General Hospital of Banda Aceh. Methods: Type of observational analytic study with cross-sectional design, non-probability sampling technique by accidental sampling. Assessment of COPD degree using spirometry and risk of malnutrition using the Mini Nutrition Assessment (MNA) instrument, with research time from 1 March to 7 April 2014. Result: During the research on the sample obtained 60 people who meet the inclusion criteria of the research results in spearmen test obtained the relationship between degree of COPD with malnutrition value p = 0.01 (α <0.05). The male sex was more dominant, 40 respondents (66,7%), age 51-60 years old 25 people (41,7%), degree of COPD more dominat28 samples (46.7%), malnutrition 45 people (75%), and wrong diet 43 people (71.7%). Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a relationship between degree of COPD and malnutrition.
