Abstract

This paper began with the idea of the intervention of state power into the education system that starts from the coercion of the state and ends up with an acceptance of the coercion as a new truth. One of the state interventions in education discussed in this paper is the way of dressing at schools known as uniform. The intervention was manifested in the form of a very detailed rule that was emerged from Soeharto era to this day on the pretext that uniform is a support in the learning process. A uniform is expressed as a form to inculcate and foster a sense of nationalism, unity, and strengthen fraternity so it might foster the spirit of unity among learners, promote equality regardless of socioeconomic inequality faced by parents/guardians of the learners, and improve learners’ discipline and responsibility as well obedience to the applicable regulations. The ideal goal of the uniform itself is never supported by any research that can prove it because behind the goal there is also business interests such as a great need of uniform supply every year. On the other side of this paper, it looked at the factory production on the skin (uniform) which is also a fail process of modernization with its’ concept of mass production with the reason of efficiency so that every human being was considered similar and losing their self-authenticity.
