Abstract

Mathematics is a compulsory course in every stage of education in Indonesia. The purpose of mathematics course is to improve students reasoning ability as well as to build a systematic mindset of students. One of the subjects in the mathematics course is Fractions. This fraction subject is known to be one of the scourges which are difficult by student in secondary school stage. The research methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive qualitative research is a study that describes various circumstances that occur in certain situations in a systematic order. There is no statistical data used in this type of research. This research was conducted to know the students' difficulties in fractional learning and solving various fractional problems with its calculation algorithm. The research shows that students' difficulties in learning fraction and addition of fraction can be caused by the concept of fraction given is not adequate for describing all types of fractions. Only positive fractions which less than 1 can be explained by the concept of a part of a whole. Moreover, understanding of fraction computation algorithm is too complicated to use because the algorithm is done without understanding. So that, students cannot use it. Even more, memorize it.
