Abstract

An investigation on development of modified chemistry demonstration learning media to solve student’s misconception in the topic of electrochemical cells has been conducted. The research was conducted as a class action research carried out in 2 cycles; cycle I applying conventional method, whilst cycle II using modified chemistry demonstration learning media method. The results showed that student’s misconception on the electrochemical cells topic were mainly caused by the student’s failure in these 3 aspects, they are: 1) limited understanding the macroscopic level (what is observed in reality), 2) limited understanding in microscopic (molecular and atomic include chemical reaction/process), and 3) limited ability in connecting macroscopic and microscopic levels. Modified chemistry demonstration media was proven to be effective in improving student’s attention and motivation in teaching-learning process. Student’s attention increased quantitatively during the learning in progress as follows: the number of students who have full attention was about 3.4% in cycle 1 and, 16.6% in cycle 2. Modified chemistry demonstration media in general, was able to solve student’s misconception in the electrochemical cell concepts. This was proven by the increasing of the number of students who able to answer the concepts correctly, from 55.8% (in cycle I) to 69.2% (in cycle II). Development of modified chemistry demonstration, specifically using of student work sheets, and movement of seat position also resulted in a positive outcome on student’s comprehension.
