Abstract

As the smallest organizational unit in society, family plays a significant role in the development of young individuals. It is in this unit that most youth development takes place, and parents play a key role in the process, which involves social, cultural, physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and psychological development. This study examines the communication competence of parents in the development process of their teenage children. Data was collected from depth interviews, analysed and interpreted by Conversation Analysis and Symbolic Interaction. The findings reveal that the parents understand and implement communication strategies, including sustainable communication that is suitable to their children’s needs. The children likewise find it easy to communicate with their parents in face-to-face and technology-mediated communication. This sustainable communication enhances their relationship and eventually contributes to the children’s development and achievements in school. This study suggests that the government needs to include the teaching of parental communication competence in the national education development program.
