Abstract

Challenging behaviour of people with dementia (PwD) is associated with a high level of stress for the caregiver especially in home settings. To address this problem, we propose an assistive system that based on sensor observations of the PwD is able to recognise the challenging behaviour, to reason about its causes, and to generate suitable intervention strategies. To achieve that, the PwD is observed through a sensor bracelet. Then based on the sensor data and additional context information, the behaviour of the PwD is interpreted. In this work we present the concept and the structural architecture of the assistive system. We discuss the requirements the system has and the corresponding challenges associated with them. Later we propose possible solutions and open problems.
