Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension means that it now affects nearly 9.7 million people annually in the world. In Indonesia, based on the results of Basic Health Research 2013, it was found that prevalence of Indonesian population aged ≥ 18 years who experienced hypertension based on the diagnosis of health personnel found as much as 9.4% experienced hypertension. Hypertension and anxiety have a complex relationship in which anxiety could have an effect on blood pressure. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between anxiety and hypertension. This study used a cross sectional design with a sample size of fifteen elderlies in a nursing home using purposive sampling technique. Data was analyzed by Spearman’s Rank Test with a 5 % significance level. It was found that 60% of the respondents had mild anxiety while 20% respondents had moderate anxiety and the other 20% respondents had severe anxiety. A significant association was not found between anxiety and hypertension (p-value = 0,870). Anxiety was not a significant factor related to hypertension. Age factor may influence a blood pressure increase in the elderly. Other risk factors that should also be investigated related to hypertension were diet, lack of activity and antihypertensive adherence.
