Abstract

The development of information technology affects the increasing types of information needed by the community, including health information. Will the changes in information retrieval using information technology also increase the knowledge of the information technology users so they can understand the need for health information better? This research was an observational cross-sectional study. The sample in this study were information seekers aged from 16 to 25 years’ old in the city of Surabaya. This sample was selected from high school students and students from a chosen university amounting to 127 respondents. The majority of adolescents and young adults access the internet to seek health information. However, the majority of adolescents and young adults get information from a free source (blog), and most of them never cross-check the validity of the information, nor do they ever ensure the competence of the people who share the information, and about 95.3% of them apply this health information in their daily lives. The perception of information accuracy has a significant relationship (p<0.05) with the practice of applying information accessed from the internet in daily life. This suggests that adolescents and young adults still consider the aspect of information accuracy before putting the information into use.
