Abstract

Abtract: Several studies have found that laughter lowers blood pressure and heart rate significantly. However, it is still unclear as to whether ethnic and genetic factors are also involved in lowering blood pressure. This studywas aimed to find out changes in blood pressure and heart rate after laughter therapy on hypertensive Balinese patients. This study was conducted on 19 Balinese hypertensive patients at the AmbarashramUbud Bali. The study was pre-post experimental design. Blood pressure was measured by sphygmomanometer; the heart rate was measured by palpation on radial artery. The data were analyzed using SPSS 17.The results showed the average pre and post systolic blood pressure were 142.9  24.1 mmHg and131.1  19.5 mm Hg, respectively; and the average of diastolic blood pressure 85.9  9.5 mm Hg and 81.1  6.6 mm Hg, respectively. The decrease in blood pressure was statistically significant (p<0.05), so was the decrease in the heart rate.Laughter treatment was effective in decreasing blood pressure and heart rate onhypertensive Balinese patients.
