Abstract

Abstract: The movement of the tooth that is caused by mechanical force derived from orthodontic appliances can cause reactions and affect cells, periodontal tissues, and alveolar bone. The tooth movement need spaces and pressure in the alveolar bone, and it may involves the process of bone remodeling. It’s not only osteoblasts and osteoclasts that are critical for bone remodeling, but also osteocytes. To discribe the action of osteocytes in alveolar bone remodeling during tooth movement caused by mechanical force derived from orthodontic appliances. Osteocytes have significant role in bone and mineral metabolism. Nowadays, osteocytes are known to play crucial role in bone remodeling. Osteocytes can regulate bone homeostatic by regulating osteoblasts and osteoclasts. They also known to act as mechanosensitive and mechanotransducer cells in bone tissues that can involved in regulation of bone resorption and remodeling. Osteocytes also produce various factors that can regulate the increase of bone formation and resorption in bone remodeling, such as Osteopontin (OPN), sclerostin, osteoblast/ osteocytes factor 45 (OF45), dentin matrix acidic phosphoprotein (DMP)-1, and receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa ß ligand (RANKL). Mechanical force derived from orthodontic appliance during tooth movements can affect the alveolar bone, which is involve both resorption and apposition in pressure and tension area of alveolar bone. The osteocytes can translate the stimuli of mechanical force into signals that sincronize osteoblasts and osteoclasts activity which can mediate the onset of bone formation and resorption.
