Abstract

Older low back pain(LBP) population is increasing worldwide. Most of LBP cases become chronic and causes significant disabilities which impair functional capacity of an individual. This study was conducted to analyze the influence of functional mobility and pain severity on functional capacity of older patients with LBP. A descriptive study was conducted in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung from September to November 2015 using total sampling method. Six-minutes walking distance (6MWD) was used to measure the functional mobility and the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain wass recorded. The total sample obtained in this research was 32. The characteristics of LBP patients in this study were mostly elderly (n=29), female gender (n=28), the mean 6MWD is 308 meters and the mean NRS before and after performing the 6MWD was 2 and 5 respectively. Most of the patients were overweight (n=16). The most common disease found is musculoskeletal disease and majority of patients had one medical disease (n=21). Female population and older adults categorized as elderly has the greatest frequency of having LBP. Older chronic LBP patients, older LBP patients with BMI higher than normal and increase in age, all have a lower mean 6MWD and higher mean NRS before and after performing 6MWD.
