Abstract

The study focused on the development of students’ character in eating healthy foods as green consumers, especially fruits and vegetables produced by local farmers. This classroom action research was conducted in collaboration with teachers of social studies in one of the junior high school partners in West Bandung regency, West Java. The collaboration was in the designing, implementing, and reflecting the learning using ecopedagogy approach by connecting the Prehistory teaching materials to the issue of contemporary society as green consumers. The concept of food-gathering and food-producing as a tradition in the prehistoric society became a means of connecting with contemporary society as green consumers. Students were facilitated to think critically about prehistoric people's habits in consuming natural healthy food and to practice it in daily life by consuming foods available in their environment. Student competencies were developed and observed in the learning process. Students in junior high schools situated in agricultural areas became the research subject so that they do not abandon the agrarian traditions of the prehistoric society that consume natural food. Their habit of consuming instant or processed foods was limited by getting them to bring lunch boxes from home. The action research and observation by the partner teachers showed that the students’ habits changed from consuming processed foods to consuming local produce. It is evident from the increasing number of students who bring lunch from home and the decreasing habit of purchasing instant snack foods in the school. This research also reminded them that their real world was the agricultural world. They understood that being green consumers was not only for healthy living but also to improve their local economic potential. Through this research, Social Studies learning became contextual with the social environment of learners.
