Abstract

One of the main challenges of education in Indonesia in this era is how to deal with flood of media. This is caused by the fact that almost all of the times spent by students out of school are used to interact with media, such as watching television, playing games, texting, phoning, etc. This is not only conducted by those who live in cities, but also becomes a prevalent experience of those who live in rural areas. This means that, more or less, most of the children‘s views about the world are influenced and shaped by media; on the other hand, until now, there is no an appropriate way of facing them conducted by a government through a national curriculum, including Curriculum 2013 (K-2013). When media present hoaxes or violent, porn, and radical stories or images continuously every day, all of those are absorbed by children without a filter. Indeed, despite threatening the children themselves, this portrait can bring a crucial problem in social society‘s life. Thereby, this paper attempts to study the K-2013 that has been applied since 2013 regarding the issue of media literacy, and propose the way of integrating media literacy education through taught subject, i.e. bahasa Indonesia subject, in order to mitigate a devastating effect of media in a young generation. A study of literature was applied to collect data, and then those were analyzed by using content analysis approach. The result of this study showed that the K-2013 is a far from an expectation as a means of inculcating media literacy to the students. But, this weakness can be diminished by integrating contents of media literacy within taught subjects.
