Abstract

This paper examines the controversial apology posted on Twitter by Ernest Prakasa (@ernest.prakasa), the interactions among the users in their response to the posts, and its impact on the emergence of social movement. The study aims is to find how hyperpersonal communication happens on Twitter following the apology posts, and how it leads to the emergence of a social movement. Data were collected by observation and documentation study of Prakasa’s tweets. The findings show that hyperpersonal communication occurred extensively on Twitter as reflected in the use of similar harsh words among the users, which led to the emergence of a social movement.
