Abstract

This section describes the design and evaluation of the ASSISTANT system. ASSISTANT is a system designed and developed with the aim of guiding and helping elderly on their public transport trips. Mobility is critical for maintaining the independence of older adults, especially since the aging process often involves giving up driving cars. The ASSISTANT systems ease of use helps seniors to maintain their independence as long as possible. This paper describes ASSISTANT’s involvement of the elderly in design and development activities ensuring that the application was useful and usable for them. Seniors over 65 (the target group for the application) participated in interviews, focus groups, controlled environment trials and evaluating the prototype at their homes. This chapter explains how they participated in this iterative process and the conclusions gathered during every stage.
