Outdoor 3D Acquisition System for Small and Fast Targets: Application to Honeybee Monitoring at the Beehive Entrance

Abstract

In response to recent biologists’ needs, we propose to lay the foundations of a stereo vision-based system for monitoring honeybees in 3D at the beehive entrance. In this context, this article highlights difficulties and introduces some solutions for problems related to the detection of the bees and tracking them in 3D under uncontrolled conditions. This study is a prerequisite for our next step that aims to detect and analyze behaviors of the bees based on their trajectories and additional external data such as the weather or health conditions.
