Trust-aware Social Recommender System Design

Quick Abstract

Recommender systems are designed to overcome the problem of information overload created by the Internet. However, current approaches for recommender system still suffer from the problems such as sparse information, cold start, and adversary attacks. On the other hand, social network sites (SNS), like Facebook and Epinions, offer a good source of knowledge for recommendation. The idea of integrating signals from social network to improve the performance of the recommendation algorithm has been well accepted and has attracted an increasing amount of research in both academia and industry. In this work, we develop a trust-aware recommender system. We interpret connections in SNS as trust relationships among users, and establish a trust network based on the social graph aligned with the recommender system. Specially, we handle indirect trust in our model, which could enlarge the information source to a large amount. We also discuss the issue of distrust and propose a way to consider both trust and distrust in our model. We also consider integrating our trust-aware recommendation framework with classic collaborative filtering to take advantage of both approaches and further improve the performance in rating prediction and item recommendation.

Quick Abstract

In this paper a new formulation is proposed for project selection problem which considers project interdependencies. Project interdependencies are factored in using the learning curve concept. The problem is modeled as a Mixed Integer Program (MIP) with quadratic constraints. To solve the problem the quadratic constraints are linearized using a new method proposed in this paper and the benefits of this approach compared to the conventional methods are emphasized. The application of this methodology is illustrated using a numerical example. The result shows the superiority of this method in reducing the number of variables dramatically.

Quick Abstract

Major portion of projects’ cost is dedicated to construction equipment’s costs which signify the importance of employing optimal equipment’s schedules in projects. In this paper the problem of construction equipment scheduling for a company with several ongoing projects in different regions is studied. The goal is scheduling heavy construction equipment and their assignments to jobs so that the total cost for the company and disruptions in projects’ schedules is minimized while considering the priorities and critical paths of the projects. A robust predictive-reactive integer model with a hybrid dynamic approach is employed in modeling the problem. Case studies showed considerable savings in cost and minimizing disruption in schedules in real time.

Quick Abstract

Detecting vehicles in satellite images has a wide range of applications. Existing approaches usually identify vehicles from their appearance. They typically generate many false positives due to the existence of a large number of structures that resemble vehicles in the images. In this paper, we explore the use of context information to improve vehicle detection performance. In particular, we use shadows and the ground appearance around vehicles as context clues to validate putative detections. A data driven approach is applied to learn typical patterns of vehicle shadows and the surrounding “road-like” areas. By observing that vehicles often appear in parallel groups in urban areas, we also use the orientations of nearby detections as another context clue. A conditional random field (CRF) is employed to systematically model and integrate these different contextual knowledge. We present results on two sets of images from Google Earth. The proposed method significantly improves the performance of the base appearance based vehicle detector. It also outperforms another state-of-the-art context model.

This paper describes the joint effort of computer scientists, archaeologists, and historians for designing a multi-agent system that exploits ontologies for the semantic description of the Mount Bego petroglyphs, thus moving a step forward their preservation. Most components of the MAS have already been developed and tested, and their integration is under way.

Quick Abstract

This paper argues for a "commonsense core" hypothesis, with emphasis on the issue of consistency in agent knowledge bases. This is part of a long-term research program, in which the hypothesis itself is being gradually refined, in light of various sorts of evidence. The gist is that a commonsense reasoning agent that would otherwise become incapacitated in the presence of inconsistent data may – by means of a modest additional error-handling “core” component – carry out more effective real-time reasoning, and also that there may be cases of interest in which the “core” is more usefully integrated into the knowledge base itself.

Quick Abstract

The future well-being of any society arguably depends on the full knowledge potential students are able to transfer from academia to the workplace upon graduation. There are different mechanisms to transfer this knowledge, and at the University of Maryland, efforts are concentrated on establishing honors programs. These programs prepare students for the acquisition of lifelong skills such as research skills, team work and leadership skills by using emerging technologies in teaching and mentoring students through their course of study. The Gemstone program is one of the five honors programs on campus and its goal is “to give our students transferable skills that will be valuable for wherever life leads them.” This paper presents how campus collaboration may help with building the foundation of this academic knowledge and with transferring it later to the workplace.

Quick Abstract

The traditional keyboard and mouse computer interface is well suited for 2D applications such as document editing, but as 3D environments become more prevalent there arises a need for new methods of user input. An immersive 3D interface is preferable, but is often cost prohibitive. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Natural User Interface (NUI), named NuWii. NuWii was designed to be used with the Spiegel visualization framework for astrophysical data. The interface makes use of Nintendo Wii Remotes as infrared tracking cameras to detect 3D gestures made by the user. These gestures are interpreted and used to control the viewing camera’s parameters throughout the course of a visualization. Our project provides a new, more intuitive way of manipulating the camera in the Spiegel visualization system. Furthermore, NuWii provides an expandable base that could be used for gesture control in many other applications.

Quick Abstract

We present TopMesh, a tool for extracting topological information from non-manifold three-dimensional objects with parts of non-uniform dimensions. The boundary of such objects is discretized as a mesh of triangles and of dangling edges, representing one-dimensional parts of the object. The geometrical and topological information extracted include the number of elements in the mesh, the number of non-manifold singularities and the Betti numbers, which characterize the topology of an object independently of the discretization of its boundary. TopMesh also computes a decomposition of the mesh into connected parts of uniform dimension, into edge-connected components formed by triangles, and into oriented edge-connected sub-meshes. We describe the functionalities of TopMesh and the algorithms implementing them.

Quick Abstract

Participatory simulation, as described by Wilensky & Stroup (1999c), is a form of agent-based simulation in which multiple humans control or design individual agents in the simulation. For instance, in a participatory simulation of an ecosystem, fifty participants might each control the intake and output of one agent, such that the food web emerges from the interactions of the human-controlled agents. We argue that participatory simulation has been under-utilized outside of strictly educational contexts, and that it provides myriad benefits to designers of traditional agent-based simulations. These benefits include increased robustness of the model, increased comprehensibility of the findings, and simpler design of individual agent behaviors. To make this argument, we look to recent research such as that from crowdsourcing (von Ahn, 2005) and the reinforcement learning of autonomous agent behavior (Abbeel, 2008).
