We argue in favour of teaching modern programming to students of “non-scientific” undergraduate disciplines (humanities), considering that computer-assisted learning should not be reduced to the usage of tools, but provides some answers to the question: how the knowledge is built. The computer science should be treated as an inherent part of their culture. We advocate the teaching of Logic Programming languages: Prolog, and of the Constraint Programming languages, such as CHR. Logic programming permits to formulate the computational problems and their solutions in a form more close to human reasoning than several other languages, and adaptable to the domains of interest of the learners.

We are convinced that one of the bottlenecks in the application of computer methods in teaching is due to the limited effort in the development of tools for the creation of pedagogical material (documents, presentations, software). These tools exist, but they are often dispersed, and sometimes not well known. Some methodological work would be more than useful. Our talk concentrates on the usage of Web-oriented information processing techniques, from the perspective of an individual: making presentations in HTML5, scripting them with Javascript, adding dynamical content from specialized, personal servers, enhancing the interaction layer between different information sources, etc. We give some simple examples belonging to the domain of teaching of sciences. In particular, the usage of servers help to modularize the teaching software support, avoiding big and complicated applications.

Eye-movements are increasingly employed to study usability issues in HCI (Human-Computer Interacetion) contexts. In this paper we introduce our appearance-based eye control system which utilizes 5 specific eye movements, such as closed-eye movement and eye movements with gaze fixation at the positions (up, down, right, left) for HCI applications. In order to measure these eye movements, we employ a fast appeance-based gaze tracking method with manifold learning technique. First we propose to concatenate local eye appearance Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern(CS-LBP) descriptor for each subregion of eye image to form an eye appearance feature vector. The calibration phase is then introduced to construct a trainning samples by spectral clustering. After that, Laplacian Eigenmaps will be applied to the trainning set and unseen input together to get the structure of eye manifolds. Finally we can infer the eye movement of the new input by its distances with the clusters in the trainning set. Experimental results demonstrate that our system with quick 4-points calibration not only can reduce the run-time cost, but also provide another way to mesure eye movements without mesuring gaze coordinates to a HCI application such as our eye control system.

This paper shows how interaction is essential for storytelling with a child. A corpus of narrative dialogues between parents and their children was coded with a mentalist grid. The results of two modelling methods were analysed by an expert in parent-child dialogue analysis. The extraction of dialogue patterns reveals regularities explaining the character’s emotion. Results showed that the most efficient models contain at least one request for attention and/or emotion.

The index selection problem (ISP) concerns the selection of an appropriate indexes set to minimize the total cost for a given workload under storage constraint. Since the ISP has been proven to be an NP-hard problem, most studies focus on heuristic algorithms to obtain approximate solutions. The problem becomes more difficult for indexes defined on multiple tables such as bitmap join indexes, since it requires the exploration of a large search space. Studies dealing with the problem of selecting bitmap join indexes mainly focused on proposing pruning solutions of the search space by the means of data mining techniques or heuristic strategies. The main shortcoming of these approaches is that the indexes selection process is performed in two steps. The generation of a large number of indexes is followed by a pruning phase. An alternative is to constrain the input data earlier in the selection process thereby reducing the output size to directly discover indexes that are of interest for the administrator. For example, to select a set of indexes, the administrator may put limits on the number of attributes or the cardinality of the attributes to be included in the indexes configuration he is seeking. In this paper we addressed the bitmap join indexes selection problem using a constraint-based approach. Unlike previous approaches, the selection is performed in one step by introducing constraints in the selection process. The proposed approach is evaluated using APB-1 benchmark.

In traditional game theory, the players attempt to maximize their utility functions. However, in real world there are many situations where payoffs have uncertainty and are fuzzy in nature. In this paper, we analyze fuzzy singleton congestion games with fuzzy payoff functions using tools from fuzzy set theory. We model this kind of games and we employ the ‘technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution’ with fuzzy data in order to rank fuzzy payoffs, and consequently alternatives, with respect to multiple criteria. Based on this ranking we find possible solutions of these games which correspond to fuzzy Nash equilibria. Our method is adequate to model real-life situations, where players make more subtle decisions.

This paper presents a planning approach for a multi-agent coordination problem in a dynamic environment. We introduce the algorithm SGInfiniteVI, allowing to apply some theories related to the engineering of multi-agent systems and designed to solve stochastic games. In order to limit the decision complexity and so decreasing the used resources (memory and processor-time), our approach relies on reducing the number of joint-action at each step decision. A scenario of multi-robot Box-pushing is used as a platform to evaluate and validate our approach. We show that only weakly dominated actions can improve the resolution process, despite a slight deterioration of the solution quality due to information loss.

This paper address the problem of an autonomous rover that have limited consumable resources to accomplish a mission. The robot has to cope with limited resources: it must decide the resource among to spent at each mission step. The resource consumption is also uncertain. Progressive processing is a meta level reasoning model particulary adapted for this kind of mission. Previous works have shown how to obtain an optimal resource consumption policy using a Markov decision process (MDP). Here, we make the assumption that the mission can dynamically change during execution time. Therefore, the agent must adapt to the current situation, in order to save resources for the most interesting future tasks. Because of the dynamic environment, the agent cannot calculate a new optimal policy online. However, it is possible to compute an approximate value function. We will show that the robot will behave as good as if it knew the optimal policy.

In this paper we develop an approach for planning under time and resource uncertainty with task dependencies. We follow the line of research described by (Bresina et al., 2002), overcoming limitations of existing approaches: they only handle simple time constraints and assume a simple model of durations and resources’ uncertainty.In many domains, such as space applications (rovers, satellites), these assumptions are invalid. Our approach considers temporal and resource constraints and fully deals with their uncertainty. From a mission graph, we build a MDP that can be optimally solved by dynamic programming, even for large mission graphs.
