A Wise Object Framework for Distributed Intelligent Adaptive Systems

Designing Intelligent Adaptive Distributed Systems is an open research issue addressing nowadays technologies such as Communicating Objects (COT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) that increasingly contribute to our daily life (mobile phones, computers, home automation, etc.). Complexity and sophistication of those systems make them hard to understand and to master by human users, in particular end-users and developers. Those are very often involved in learning processes that capture all their attention while being of little interest for them. To alleviate human interaction with such systems and help developers to produce them, we propose WOF, an object oriented framework founded on the concept of \emph{Wise Object} (WO). A WO is a software-based entity that is able to learn on itself and also on the others (e.g. its environment). Wisdom refers to the experience (on its own behavior and on the usage done of it) such object acquires by its own during its life. In the paper, we present the WOF conceptual architecture and the Java implementation we built from it. Requirements and design principles of wise systems are presented. To provide application (e.g. home automation system) developers with relevant support, we designed WOF with the minimum intrusion in the application source code. The adaptiveness, intelligence and distribution related mechanisms defined in WOF are inherited by application classes. In our Java implementation of WOF, object classes produced by a developer inherit the behavior of Wise Object (WO) class. An instantiated system is then a Wise Object System (WOS) composed of wise objects that interact through an event bus according to publish-subscribe design pattern.

Quick Abstract

Intervention planning is crucial for maintenance operations in particle accelerator environments with ionizing radiation, during which the radiation dose contracted by maintenance workers should be reduced to a minimum. In this context, we discuss the visualization aspects of a new software tool, which integrates interactive exploration of a scene depicting an accelerator facility augmented with residual radiation level simulations, with the visualization of intervention data such as the followed trajectory and maintenance tasks. The visualization of each of these aspects has its effect on the final predicted contracted radiation dose. In this context, we explore the possible benefits of a user study, with the goal of enhancing the visual conditions in which the intervention planner using the software tool is minimizing the radiation dose.

Quick Abstract

Enterprise Information Systems have to co-evolve with the enterprise they support. Their evolution is the one of an important software system. Software evolution should be addressed at all developpement phases in order to notably reduce costs (Lehman, 1996). The issue of software systems evolution has been addressed mainly at the code level. In this paper we present how evolution of enterprise information systems can take place at higher abstraction levels, when using an architecture-centred development process. The evolutions addressed are dynamic, i.e. they take place at runtime and concern both planned and unplanned evolutions of the enterprise information system.

Quick Abstract

Many Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) have been proposed in the software architecture community, with several competing notations, each of them bringing its own body of specification languages and analysis techniques. The aim of all is to reduce the costs of error detection and repair while providing adequate abstractions for modelling large software-intensive systems and establishing properties of interest. However, there now exists a large consensus to standardise on notations and methods for software analysis and design as standardisation provides an economy of scale that results in various and better tools, better interoperability between tools, more available developers skilled in using the standard notation, and lower training costs. Therefore software-intensive process architectures can be relevantly described using a standard-compliant design notation. Among such notations, the UML modelling language that on one side makes use of visual notations and on the other side, is an emerging standard software design language and a starting point for bringing architectural modelling into industrial use. This paper presents an architecture-centred UML-based notation to describe software process architectures. The architectural concepts have already been formally defined in an Architecture Description textual Language. The notation is illustrated by a business-to-business process application. The main contribution of this work is to show that UML with its large and extensible set of predefined constructs imposes itself as a relevant candidate to be extended with the necessary architectural concepts and customisation to model software-intensive processes. The work presented is being developed and validated within the framework of the ArchWare1 IST 5 ongoing European project.

Quick Abstract

Nowadays, enterprises need to control their business processes and to manage more and more information. EAI - Enterprise Application Integration - solutions offer a partial response to these requirements. However, the lack of formalisation that characterises such solutions limits the reuse and verification of properties. This paper claims that business processes have to be formally defined using a formalism that presents certain features (representation of several abstraction levels, domain specific concepts, property expression and preservation, etc.) and proposes the use of an ADL - Architecture Description Language - as formalism. A case study illustrates our proposition.
