Quick Abstract

A cognitive map is an oriented graph whose nodes are labeled by concepts and edges represent influences. It provides a way to model strategies or influence systems. Cognitive maps do not take into account any temporal features. This article proposes a solution to this lack: a temporal cognitive map model defined on a temporal ontology. The temporal ontology is used to represent temporal domain knowledge and to temporally characterize the concepts of the cognitive map. An extension, named TCMQL, of the cognitive map query language CMQL, is proposed in order to access the concepts’ temporality and compare them making inferences.

Quick Abstract

This paper presents a tool designed to assist a virtual reality learner in a vocational training context. The benefits of VR are spreading outside the video-games and research field, leading the vocational education institutions to consider using this technology for training purposes. By simulating emblematic professional situations, teachers can train students in good conditions regarding safety, logistics and financial resources. In the French vocational training system, VR is just at its beginnings and the lack of experiments with this training context highlighted the need for new tools allowing teachers to use VR with their students. The work presented in this paper is part of a global project aiming to create, design and assess new VR tools and methodologies for this specific context. In order to guide, inform and assist the user, we are presenting a generic tool that can ease VR sessions by proposing embedded tools within easy reach of the immersed user, such as a camera, an inventory, a printer or stock management. This tool is a virtual tablet that can be grabbed by the immersed user allowing her/him to interact efficiently with the virtual environment.

Quick Abstract

In neuropsychology, many computerized solutions have been proposed in order to assess patients’ functioning in activities of daily living, via realistic interactive simulation. In this context, most developed systems are based on simple devices, real time 2D interaction, and monoscopic 3D computer graphics environment. Behavioral analysis has drawn the interest of many domains, such as neuropsychology, ergonomics, web design, or virtual reality. However, advances on this topic remains fragmented in their respective areas. Thus, in computerized solutions applied to neuropsychology, the behavioral analysis does not take into account the data from interaction. The potential interest of computerized solutions is hence underexploited. In this paper, we propose a transdisciplinary solution, based on a finer analysis of 2D interaction data, such as stop duration. This method could reveal interesting aspects of users’ behaviors.

Quick Abstract

This chapter present a set of studies that have been developed with the goal of probing the possibilities of using laser speckle effect as a tool to extract macrocirculatory hemodynamic parameters. Within this project, a laser speckle prototype has been constructed and three bench experiment have been designed. The first bench experiment consists on using multi-wavelength light sources to extract the vibration frequency of a phantom and heart rate of several subjects. The second experiment consists on the extraction of the pulse pressure waveform using the same instrumentation and processing algorithms as the ones used on microcirculation laser speckle imaging. Finally, a pilot study was also designed in order to use laser speckle for 2D image segmentation. The obtained results revealed that laser speckle has the capability to extract macrocirculatory hemodynamic parameters and that this feature can be included in commercially available devices. In this sense, the ability to extract macrocirculatory and microcirculatory parameters could lead to interesting commercial advantages.

Quick Abstract

This work presents an analysis of the performances for four different implementations used to compute laser speckle contrast on images. Laser speckle contrast is a widely used imaging technique for biomedical applications. These implementations were tested using synthetic laser speckle patterns with different resolutions, speckle sizes, and contrasts. From the applied methods, three implementations are already known in the literature. A new alternative is proposed herein, which relies on two-dimensional convolutions, in order to improve the image processing time without compromising the contrast assessment. The proposed implementation achieves a processing time two orders of magnitude lower than the analytical evaluation. The goal of this technical manuscript is to help the developers and researchers in computing laser speckle contrast images.

Quick Abstract

This paper proposes a combination of virtual reality (VR) and constraint programming (CP) to develop an efficient system that will assist users when performing 3D layout tasks in a virtual environment. We conducted an experimental study to investigate the extent to which the solver’s assistance affects user performance in 3D-layout tasks. Volunteer participants were instructed to layout a generic 3D scene which was displayed on a large-scale rear-projected screen. Results showed that the solver provided significant assistance in both simple and complex tasks. The participants performed the layout tasks more accurately and in significantly less time when the constraint solver was used. Most of the subjects reported that the solver was useful in completing the layout tasks and they were generally satisfied by the proposed solution. However, it was observed that some subjects had difficulty in interacting with the solver, especially during the complex tasks.

Quick Abstract

A central question in cognitive sciences is how behaviors adapted to the situations encountered are produced. This question can be addressed in different ways and often requires the researcher to choose between highly controlled and standardized laboratory situations (commonly referred to as artificial settings) and studies undertaken in natural settings which may be more realistic, but cannot be controlled as required by a rigorous scientific approach. Using car driving as an example, our study will show how virtual reality (VR) offers a compromise between these two alternatives. Indeed, VR can simulate controlled immersive environments that offer different levels of realism. Moreover, VR makes it possible to implement different devices. For instance, VR enables researchers to analyze oculomotor behavior, which is fundamental in the field of car driving and is considered an indicator of attentional deployment. The work presented in this paper is based on a car driving simulator currently under development and aimed at studying the cognitive processes involved in car driving such as attentional processes and anticipatory mechanisms.

Quick Abstract

This paper focuses on the evaluation of virtual reality (VR) interaction techniques for exploration of data warehouse (DW). The experimental DW involves hierarchical levels and contains information about customers profiles and related purchase items. A user study has been carried out to compare two navigation and selection techniques. Sixteen volunteers were instructed to explore the DW and look for information using the interaction techniques, involving either a single WiimoteTM (monomanual) or both WiimoteTM and NunchuckTM (bimanual). Results indicated that the bimanual interaction technique is more efficient in terms of speed and error rate. Moreover, most of the participants preferred the bimanual interaction technique and found it more appropriate for the exploration task. We also observed that males were faster and made less errors than females for both interaction techniques.

Quick Abstract

Virtual Reality is now recognized as a powerful tool for the assessment and rehabilitation of both motor and cognitive impairments. In this context, effective Virtual Environments (VEs) that simulate everyday tasks must be proposed. We have developed a virtual supermarket (VS) in which the user can explore and collect various items using a shopping cart. Four interaction techniques have been designed and compared in terms of usability, performance and workload with healthy volunteer participants. These techniques go beyond the desktop paradigm by offering a more immersive and intuitive way of interaction. Results showed that participants were more efficient in terms of performance (completion time and travelled distance) using the game-pad rather than using full body gestures. However, they had more fun performing the task under these conditions.

Quick Abstract

We present a non-immersive virtual reality (VR) system for the rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Our objective is to encourage and motivate children to improve their limb motor control while play- ing a game. Two tasks are available : (1) intercepting or (2) to catching / releasing moving objects using a Kinect sensor. These tasks are achieved via the control of a virtual character placed in a virtual island. A control-display ratio is used to virtually increase the child workspace allowing him/her to reach all the approaching objects. In addition, a dynamic difﬁculty adjustment (DDA) is used to keep a good motivation level. Furthermore, a virtual coach is provided to support and congratulate the children. Twenty healthy chil- dren participated in a preliminary experiment. The aim was (1) to collect control data concerning performance and workload, and (2) to investigate the effect of the virtual coach. Results show a good usability of the game and reveal a high ratio of acceptance and enjoyment from the children.
