Quick Abstract

Music industry has been completely disrupted by a range of new online digital services and social networking systems that has forever changed the way users and businesses experience and use music. This had a tremendous impact on the established music business models that had guided a dozen year-old industry. On what concerns business music users, i.e. businesses that make use of music as part of their own business model, and on the business relation they establish with author societies or their representatives, they are required to pay royalties for the use of music. These royalties need to be distributed and authors will have the opportunity to see their work rewarded properly. The proper distribution of royalties is a non-transparent and complex process. In this paper, the authors present a system, called MusicBeetle that enables the identification, collection and distribution of music royalties through the usage of decentralised system and low cost hardware devices.

Quick Abstract

Much has been talked about security, and with the wide spread and adoption of Cloud computing, the talk has followed the buzz and put Cloud Security in the spotlights. Security guides for the Cloud has been published, but we understand that is still missing a practical assessment methodology that would allow organizations to quick understand how the security of their assets are impacted when it is farmed out to Public Clouds. Our contribution to address this problem is a method to isolate the organization’s assets from the environment it is hosted, and compare metrics from the environment only. This method provides the important benefit of allowing the organization to determine how security will be impacted without having to actually migrate its resources.

Quick Abstract

In the digital world protecting digital intellectual property is proving to be a hard task. Not only it is complex to provide robust and reliable mechanisms to prevent unauthorized content copying and utilization, but also it is complex to provide a mechanism for specifying and enforcing how content can and will be used. Rights expression languages allow content providers and distributors to syntactically and semantically to express a set of rights that are associated to a digital object. In this paper we will provide the definition and description of the digital object license granting rights life cycle management and processes necessary to secure the license throughout this entire life cycle.

Quick Abstract

In a more and more interconnected world where the available bandwidths are increasing at a pace hard to imagine some time ago, multimedia e-content distribution over digital networks has become one of the biggest available services online. Powered not only by the network high availability but also by the emergence of new compression techniques and digital content consumer device, digital content is gaining momentum. However the same factors that power this emergence are also causing some problems, specially related with the digital content IPR management and protection. These problems are being handled employing DRM - Digital Rights Management technology which lack interoperability. This paper presents and discusses a solution that provides interoperability to DRM-protected content through the employment of a client-side DRM middleware layer. This middleware layer sits at the client-side of a broader DRM system (called DoRM) providing the necessary mechanisms to achieve interoperability between the different digital content rendering applications that the users possesses.

Quick Abstract

During the past few years the web has changed and something which has been developed primarily for desktop computers can now be accessed from everywhere using portable and mobile devices. However, these new devices have some serious limitations in terms of screen size and computational power, just to mention a few. In order to display web pages designed for desktop-sizes monitors, some small screen web browsers provide different approaches for this problem – however, these approaches have limitations. In this paper, we have performed tests to five different small screen rendering web-browsers (Pocket Internet Explorer, Minimo, NetFront, Opera, Opera Mini) while rendering some relevant web sites.

Quick Abstract

The lack of control inherent to digital content has been put on the spotlight by copyright infringement coupled with massive content distribution online (e.g., Peer-to-Peer). Digital Rights Management seems to be the solution to counter this problem advocating the use of cryptography and other related security mechanisms to protect digital content and to associate rights with it which determine how, when and by whom it can be consumed. The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) specifies mobile service enablers in order to ensure interoperability throughout the mobile spectrum. As prominent mobile devices, Symbian OS smartphones offer an interesting platform for the demonstration of OMA DRM for the consumption of multimedia content. This article outlines the mechanisms enabling the protected consumption of the open and patent-free audio format (Ogg Vorbis Website), Ogg Vorbis using an OMA DRM 2.0 compliant audio player application running under Symbian OS (directed for mobile devices).

Quick Abstract

This paper proposes Zás, a novel, flexible, and expressive authorization mechanism for Java. Zás has been inspired by Ramnivas Laddad’s proposal to modularize Java Authentication and Authorization Services (JAAS) using an Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) approach. Zás’ aims are to be simultaneously very expressive, reusable, and easy to use and configure. Zás allows authorization services to be non-invasively added to existing code. It also cohabits with a wide range of authentication mechanisms. Zás uses Java 5 annotations to specify permission requirements to access controlled resources. These requirements may be changed directly during execution. They may also be calculated by client supplied permission classes before each access to the corresponding resource. These features, together with several mechanisms for permission propagation, expression of trust relationships, depth of access control, etc., make Zás, we believe, an interesting starting point for further research on the use of AOP for authorization.

Quick Abstract

Music is from far one of the most important types of media that is being exchanged in today's open networks. Users, pushed by a growing number of factors are exchanging more and more music files using popular P2P sharing technologies, such as Kazaa, e-Mule or Gnutella. If from one side this fact is important and positive, from the other side it is driving to a growth in the number of piracy situations, related to the violation of the authors copyright. Super distribution is from far the most popular electronic business model on the Internet and the World Wide Web. This is especially true when digital formatted content, such as music, videos or even books are considered. What are the main reasons for these facts? - Because it works. This paper proposes an approach to address such IPR issues trough the usage of an open DRM architecture.

This paper describes the OpenSDRM security, based on an open-source framework developed for the IST project MOSES, OpenSDRM is used to control the multimedia content consumption in conjunction with the new MPEG-4 IPMPX proposed standard. This architecture, composed by several building blocks, protects the content flow from creation to final user consumption on a specific device.
