Quick Abstract

Product line techniques have proven being a successful concept of software reuse. Hence, product line techniques have been applied for business process models. Although there are well established models for describing business processes such as BPMN or ARIS there is a lack of describing the variability in business processes. In the paper, we propose to apply Decision Model and Notation (DMN) for modeling process variability. DMN has the advantage that it is a known concept and well understood. DMN supports the decision techniques by defining the variability in business processes and with the rules defining the variability.

Quick Abstract

Activities for achieving traceability in software development projects include planning, implementing, using and maintaining a suitable strategy. Current research aims at supporting these activities by automating the involved tasks, processes and applications. In this paper, we present a concept for developing a flexible framework which enables the integration of respective functional modules, e.g. artifact data extractors and trace link generators, to form traceability environments according to the project’s demands. By automating the execution of the framework’s components and monitoring artifact-related interactions between developers and their tools, the tracing data’s life cycle is captured and provided for further usages. This paper presents an exemplified framework setup which is used to demonstrate the path and enrichment of tracing data along these components. Furthermore, we discuss observations and findings which we made during defining and realizing the example. We aim at using this information to further improve the framework in order to support the implementation of traceability environments.

Quick Abstract

Expanding current software traceability methodologies offers opportunities to significantly support development activities. State-of-the-art traceability frameworks use tracing data at specific points in time. This data includes information about development artefacts and their relations, which may be used for analysis, visualisation and similar purposes. In between those points in time, developers create, modify or delete requirements, diagrams, source code and other relevant artefacts. We propose to capture such artefact interactions in order to enrich the tracing data. By applying existing approaches in the field of developer-tool interaction analysis to the enriched data, we aim at supporting the developer’s work. In this paper, we present the overall approach, along with our development of a modular framework which may be used to capture the desired data from various tools, manage it and finally enable the execution of developer-interaction analyses.

Model checking has been established as an appropriate technology to validate behavioral properties of (business) process based systems. However, further validation technologies (e. g. for structural properties) may be of interest for process models. We propose a concept to integrate validation technologies in a unique system with a common user interface.

Quick Abstract

AWeb Information System (WIS) can be described by a storyboard, which on a high level of abstraction specifies who will be using the system, in which way and for which goals. Syntax and semantics of storyboarding have been well-elaborated. Pragmatics is the necessary complement addressing what the storyboard means for its users. The part of pragmatics concerned with usage analysis by means of life cases, user models and contexts has been dealt with before. In this paper we complement usage analysis by WIS portfolios, which comprise two parts: the information portfolio and the utilisation portfolio. The former one is concerned with information consumed and produced by the WIS users, which leads to content chunks; the latter one captures functionality requirements.

Quick Abstract

Process and workflow models are typical means to describe the dynamic activities of a system. Therefore, it is of high interest to validate these models. Many kinds of (business) rules, best practices, patterns, legal regulations may serve as specifications which the models have to fulfill. An already established technique to validate models of dynamic activities is model checking. In model checking the requirements are expressed by temporal logic. Temporal logic allows describing temporal dependencies. The models to be verified by model checkers are automata. In this context the question is how to transform process or workflow models into automata and how to specify the temporal logic in the way that the semantic of the process models is considered sufficiently. In our paper we present three approach to transform process models to checkable automata. We use the example of ARIS Event-driven Process Chains. In particular, the third approach introduces specializers enabling semantic-rich requirement specifications. This reduces the gap between process models (consisting of different model element types) and verification models.

Quick Abstract

On a high level of abstraction a Web Information System (WIS) can be described by a storyboard, which in an abstract way specifies who will be using the system, in which way and for which goals. While syntax and semantics of storyboarding has been well explored, its pragmatics has not. This paper contributes the first step towards closing this gap. For this we present life cases, which capture observations of user behaviour in reality. We discuss the facets of life cases and present a semi-formal way for their documentation. Life cases can be used in a pragmatic way to specify a story space, which is an important component of a storyboard.

Quick Abstract

In this paper, e-learning meets decision support in enterprises’ business practice. This presentation is based on an on-line e-learning system named DaMiT for the domain of knowledge discovery and data mining (see http://damit.dfki.de). The DaMiT system has primarily been developed for technology enhanced learning in German academia. It is now on the cusp of entering training on demand in enterprises. Simple stand-alone e-learning seems quite unrealistic and does not meet the needs of industry. It is very unlikely that employees take a detour to study theory of whatever sort. More likely, they are willing to engage in studies whenever the need derives directly from their practical work. In those cases, they might even be willing to dive into theory. How to dovetail e-learning and enterprise business applications, such that both sides benefit from it?
