Harnessing clinical datasets from the repository of electronic health records for research and medical intelligence has become the norm of the 21st century. Clinical datasets present a great opportunity for medical researchers and data analysts to perform cohort selections and data linkages to support better informed clinical decision-making and evidence-based medicine. This paper utilized Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC®) encoding methodology to encode the biochemistry tests in the anonymized biochemistry dataset obtained from the Health Informatics Centre (HIC) at the University of Dundee. Preliminary results indicated that the encoded dataset was flexible in supporting statistical analysis and data mining techniques. Moreover, the results indicated that the LOINC codes cover most of the biochemistry tests used in National Health Service (NHS) Tayside, Scotland.

The introduction of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems in the healthcare industry has brought anticipation as to whether the use of the system is enabling or constraining healthcare providers’ efforts in providing efficient healthcare services and evidence-based practice. Although few EMR systems have managed to achieve success in the healthcare industry, many have failed to meet the expectations of healthcare providers and the general public. In this paper, a literature review was used to explore the possible trends or factors which may help future electronic medical record initiatives achieve greater success and less failure. The practical and research implications for implementing successful EMR initiatives are also discussed.

In this paper, we address full-body articulated human motion tracking from multi-view video sequences acquired in a studio environment. The tracking is formulated as a multi-dimensional nonlinear optimisation and solved using particle swarm optimisation (PSO), a swarm-intelligence algorithm which has gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to solve difficult nonlinear optimisation problems. Our tracking approach is designed to address the limits of particle filtering approaches: it initialises automatically, removes the need for a sequence-specific motion model and recovers from temporary tracking divergence through the use of a powerful hierarchical search algorithm (HPSO). We quantitatively compare the performance of HPSO with that of the particle filter (PF) and annealed particle filter (APF). Our test results, obtained using the framework proposed by (Balan et al., 2005) to compare articulated body tracking algorithms, show that HPSO’s pose estimation accuracy and consistency is better than PF and compares favourably with the APF, outperforming it in sequences with sudden and fast motion.

Regular textures can be modelled as consisting of periodic patterns where a fundamental unit, or texel, occurs repeatedly. This paper explores the use of a representation of texel geometry for classification and comparison of regular texture images. Texels are automatically extracted from images and the distribution of texel shape and orientation is modelled. The application of this model to image retrieval and browsing is discussed using examples from a database of art and textile images.

The extraction of printed designs and woven patterns from textiles is formulated as a pixel labelling problem. Algorithms based on Markov random field (MRF) optimisation and reestimation are described and evaluated on images from an historical fabric archive. A method for quantitative evaluation is presented and used to compare the performance of MRF models optimised using $\alpha-$expansion and iterated conditional modes, both with and without parameter reestimation. Results are promising for potential application to content-based indexing and browsing.

This paper investigates the detection and classification of fighting and pre and post fighting events when viewed from a video camera. Specifically we investigate normal, pre, post and actual fighting sequences and classify them. A hierarchical AdaBoost classifier is described and results using this approach are presented. We show it is possible to classify pre-fighting situations using such an approach and demonstrate how it can be used in the general case of continuous sequences.

Breast tissue microarrays (TMAs) facilitate the study of very large numbers of breast tumours in a single histological section, but their scoring by pathologists is time consuming, typically highly quantised, and not without error. This paper compares the results of different classification and ordinal regression algorithms trained to predict the scores of immunostained breast TMA spots, based on spot features obtained in previous work by the authors. Despite certain theoretical advantages, Gaussian process ordinal regression failed to achieve any clear performance gain over classification using a multi-layer perceptron. The use of the entropy of the posterior probability distribution over class labels for avoiding uncertain decisions is demonstrated.

Stimulated by the rapid development in ICT, wireless communication and sensor development, patient care is moving out of the institution and into the personal realm. The move requires that eHealth systems should be tailored to the user, including personalization and adaptation to user context. This paper describes ongoing work to establish a standard for such personalization. The standard builds on the user's preferences and current situation, which together define the current user profile. This profile can then be used by eHealth services and devices to ensure a user experience tailored to each person and situation. The work surveys relevant areas of personalization, like identity management, profile management etc, addressing those aspects of personalization that are specific to eHealth: user capabilities, care provider roles and functions, health related information, and confidentiality measures.

This paper presents an approach to utilising computer game technologies and methodologies to support explorative learning. This approach has particular relevance to subjects such as archaeology and geography which contain a significant fieldwork component. A detailed case study, the LAVA project, is presented and the design decisions taken discussed. LAVA was motivated by the need to provide support for explorative learning and an understanding of fieldwork for classes of students in the face of the very few opportunities available for participating in real archaeological excavations. The aim of LAVA is not to replace real world fieldwork, but rather to provide realistic simulations that allow students to better prepare for any involvement with a real excavation. These objectives have initially been achieved through the combination of a 3D game engine, 2D maps and a group-based learning environment.

The World Wide Web offers many services from typical textual web content to shopping, banking and educational services, for example, virtual learning environments. These technologies are inherently complex to use, but in their very nature offer many benefits to the disabled person. The traversal of the web relies upon the cognitive skills of the user. You need to know what you want to do. You need to understand what the site is allowing you to do, and you need to be able to complete the task by interacting with the website. The emergence of the semantic web offers the potential to reduce the cognitive burden of understanding what the site can do and how to complete a task, whilst also offering new solutions to typical accessibility issues. In this paper, we aim to present how the semantic web can be used to enhance accessibility. Firstly we’ll give some examples of what is currently possible. Secondly we’ll motivate some research initiatives to enhance user independence for the disabled person, particularly those that use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems and/or are Learning Impaired.
