In this paper, we describe a technique for elasticity and depth measurement via both secondary speckle and time multiplexing interference approach. Using external stimulation of elastic medium (in example: human tissue) by infra-sonic vibration, photons from different depths of the elastic medium were separated. In addition, this work uses a modulated laser that incorporates at the same scanning time, a speckle pattern tracking method for sensing surface tilting and interferometer method for sensing z-axis movements. In this paper, we present preliminary experiments showing the ability to separate data of light coming from different layers in the elastic medium.

Software modularity by pinpointing and subsequent resolution of the remaining coupling problems is often assumed to be a general approach to optimize any software system design. However, software coupling types with differing specific characteristics, seemingly pose serious impediments to any generic coupling resolution approach. Despite the diversity of types, this work proposes a generic approach to solve any coupling type in three steps: a-obtain the Dependency graph for the coupled modules; b-convert the dependency graph into a Bipartite Graph; c-generate the Laplacian Matrix from the Bipartite Graph. Coupling problems to be resolved are then located, using Laplacian eigenvectors, in particular the Fiedler eigenvector. The generic approach is justified, explained in detail, and illustrated by a few case studies.

Social Networking software is perceived as a fast way to engage people with potential interest in a certain activity. However, interestingness has been defined as a product of a domain relevance – arbitrarily determined by a person’s tastes – and a surprise – determined by how unexpected is an activity relative to average activities in the domain. Therefore, one must manage two unknowns to trigger the desired interestingness: the person tags and the activity description. The person tags are obtained from an application ontology characterizing the chosen domain. The activity description tries to generate surprises by sharpening what differentiates it from conventional activities. This paper describes a software tool based upon a social networking infra-structure and illustrates its quasi-automated usage with inputs of the relevant tags and the surprising activity for a specific domain, viz. marketing of an Event within a conference. Preliminary results are analysed and discussed at length.

An experienced software professional with several years of programming in some languages is usually expected to read or write with proficiency in a new programming language. However, if severe time constraints are involved, and given the current availability of internet sources, there is no reason to avoid shortcuts supporting fast translation of source code keywords into Natural Language. This work describes our tool coined PL-to-NL Translator, the main ideas behind it, and its extensions. One basic assumption that was clear from the beginning of this work is the need to keep as far as possible a clear separation between generic infra-structure and the specifics of particular programming languages. Moreover, the tool keeps its generality relative to programming languages, enabling through its contributor engine, addition of any desired current or future programming language. The ideas and the software tool characteristics are illustrated by some case studies involving a few sufficiently different programming languages.

We have recently shown that one can obtain the number and sizes of modules of a software system from the eigenvectors of the Modularity Matrix weighted by an affinity matrix. However such a weighting still demands a suitable definition of an affinity. This paper obtains the same results by means of a Laplacian Matrix, directly based upon the Modularity Matrix without the need of weighting. These formalizations are different alternatives leading to the same outcomes based upon a central idea: modules are connected components. The important point is that, independently of specific advantages of given techniques, there is just one single unified algebraic theory of software composition – the Linear Software Models – behind the different approaches. The specifics of the Laplacian Matrix technique, after its formal enunciation, are illustrated by calculations made for case studies.

Modulaser is a software tool which produces a Modularity Matrix, to analyse the design of a software system given by its executable code. However, besides the concrete practical purposes of Modulaser, it is important to understand its techniques in a deeper sense. It is immediately clear that it describes the system in a higher abstraction level than the executable code, as the Modularity Matrix follows an implicit class diagram. But behind classes there are concepts. Thus, the ultimate purpose of Modulaser is conceptual analysis. This paper explains the ideas, describe Modulaser in these terms, and illustrate it by a series of case studies.

There have been many formulations of “theories” of software systems with a variety of techniques, scopes and degrees of sophistication. But, one element is almost universally absent in all these theories: a clear delimitation of what is forbidden in terms of design. This absence is somewhat surprising, as in other engineering disciplines there are obvious forbidden domains. This paper proposes that in addition to common quality criteria for scientific theories – such as formality, universality and precision – an acceptable software theory should clearly demarcate the forbidden in contrast to the possible. This goal is attainable in small and discrete design space as it limits the amount of subspace search. Algebra is argued to be the mathematical field suitable to characterize forbidden domain boundaries, in particular using an eigenvectors approach. Boundaries are illustrated by a case study.

Conceptual Integrity has been declared the most important consideration for software system design. However, the very concept of Conceptual Integrity remained quite vague, lacking a precise formal definition. This paper offers a path to a novel definition of Conceptual Integrity in terms of the Modularity Matrix, the basic structure of Linear Software Models. We provide arguments for the plausibility of the Modularity Matrix as the suggested source of software system Conceptual Integrity, viz. the orthogonality and propriety of the Matrix modules. Furthermore, the paper also reveals some new characteristic properties of Software Conceptual Integrity.

A non-programmer, who is an expert game player, could easily grasp the idea of improving his jumping avatar by importing a flying property found in another game. But in order to actually exchange conceptual objects between games one would need a suitably transparent software infra-structure. We propose the usage of UFOs – Unidentified Flying Objects – that can be smoothly transmitted and embedded into the target game, and except for their conceptual label, are so-to-speak unidentified by the non-programmer. This approach has been designed and implemented into a distributed system of multiple software games in different mobile computers. Beyond games, this system serves as a feasibility proof for on-the-fly exchange of Conceptual Objects among any kinds of software applications.

There is a gap between code and documentation in many software development projects. This gap usually grows as time goes by, decreasing developers ability to keep product quality high. We describe how documentation based on a common wiki can be enhanced with domain knowledge in ways that ensure better live documentation. This way updated and relevant documentation, i.e., specifications, manuals, models, test scripts, etc. lead ultimately to higher quality software.
