A Meta-analytical View on the Acceptance of Mhealth Apps

Quick Abstract

Never before has there been such a driving transformation of healthcare concerning digitalization as in early 2020 due to the pandemic. The digital transformation in the health sector holds great potential to meet the challenges of demographic change, the financial burden on the health system and the shortage of skilled workers. One digital solution is the usage of modern information and communication technologies (ICT), such as mhealth applications (mhealth apps). However, the usage of mhealth apps especially in the German healthcare system is still evolving and the usage rate of mhealth apps among the population is rather low. To understand acceptance-relevant factors for the usage, this meta-analytical study presents two samples before and during pandemic times (survey times 2019 and 2021). To analyse these samples the UTAUT2 acceptance model in an extended version was applied. The additional factors are online privacy, trust and ehealth literacy. In total 644 participants took part. The results show, that the factors habit, hedonic motivation, performance expectancy, social influence and effort expectancy contribute most strongly to the intention to use mhealth apps as well as the added factor trust. The decisive factor for the user profiles was age.

Quick Abstract

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies have a high potential to combat healthcare challenges while supporting older adults to live independently at their own home. Despite the general positive uptake of such technology, perceptions of barriers of acceptance persist, a major one regards privacy. With an explorative qualitative approach, the current study aimed at investigating participantsc̀ognitive representations of a scenario in which AAL is installed in the own home as a support at an older age. Special focus was on eliciting participantsìmplications for privacy in this scenario and to understand the individual requirements of using AAL technology at home. Opinions of 12 participants (age range: 23-81 years) from Germany and Switzerland were assessed through semi-structured interviews. The paper presents descriptive results and emerging themes of the mapping approach. The results show the usefulness of the method to understand thought processes of potential users regarding privacy preferences and technology usage. Findings might be useful to inform technical designers as well as lawmakers to consider these usage requirements during technology or law development.

Quick Abstract

Due to a demographic change of the society, health care worker shortage and rising co- and multimorbidity within older adults, constant care at home and at care facilities face a difficult task to combat these challenges. Medical AAL technology offers many opportunities to relieve health care workers and assist older adults with difficulties in managing activities of daily life (ADL). This study has adopted an exploratory interview method to explore the users’ perceptions of trust in the medical context and specifically, related to medical AAL technologies. Eleven participants ranging from 20 years to 87 years old (M = 52.27; SD = 24.2) were interviewed and, in line with previous results in the literature, results revealed three categories of influences, namely user factors, technology factors, and context factors. This implies a network of trust dependent on various external and internal influences. These findings have practical implications for clinicians, developers, policy makers and legal professionals.

Quick Abstract

Simulations and synthetic data are a necessary supplement to real-world experiments in order to alleviate its effort, cost and risks. As demand of data for development and validation increases, simulations too must correspondingly be scaled. Variation of simulation parameters affords simulation designers control over the scope of how a simulation is scaled— they can chose a balance between target distribution of simulation variants and the degree of randomness— thereby achieving both the volume and diversity of synthetic data. This paper proposes logical scenarios as basis for simulation variation. Scenarios are formal human-readable scripts of simulations and test drives used within the automotive industry. They are defined at different abstraction levels, one of which is the logical scenario as a parameterized simulation model with description for parameters instead of concrete values. This contribution proposes methodologies to model the parameter descriptions in a modular fashion with parameter ranges, probability distributions and inter-relations. A randomization engine is introduced based on Markov chain Monte-Carlo methods to efficiently sample the modeled space. The result is a variety of simulation-independent concrete scenarios that follow the formal scenario specification.

Quick Abstract

A lack of (medical) personnel and high proportions of older people in need of care pose enormous challenges for care institutions, often resulting in hospitalizations of nursing home residents (geriatric patients). Frequently, these hospitalizations are not medically necessary and cause a deterioration of health. The usage of telemedical consultations in nursing homes represents one approach that aims at the reduction of unnecessary hospitalizations of geriatric patients and at supporting care personnel in acute and medically uncertain situations. For a successful implementation of these telemedical consultations, especially the patients’ as well as the care personnel’s perspectives and acceptance are essential. This paper presents first qualitative results from a social communication science perspective within the Optimal@NRW project. Based on an interview study with residents and care personnel of different nursing homes (N=28) first attitudes, perceived advantages, and concerns as well as requirements regarding the usage of telemedical consultations are identified. These results provide the basis for further quantifications and comparisons of acceptance parameters of using telemedical consultations in nursing homes in general and across the entire duration of the project in specific.

Quick Abstract

Rising numbers of older people and people in need of care pose tremendous challenges for care institutions. Due to a lack of medical personnel, residents of nursing homes (geriatric patients) are frequently hospitalized although it is not medically necessary and causes a deterioration of health in many cases. Telemedical consultations in nursing homes represent one approach to relief and support care personnel in emergency and medically uncertain situations aiming at a reduction of unnecessary hospitalizations of geriatric patients. For a successful implementation of these consultations and related innovative processes, the patients’ and as well as other stakeholders’ (caregivers, doctors, relatives) perspectives and acceptance are important. Thus, a systematic investigation and adjustment of the requirements is of immense importance. This paper introduces the Optimal@NRW approach for a cross-sectoral care structure that aims at an avoidance of unnecessary hospital admissions by implementing telemedical infrastructure in nursing homes. A first scenario-based acceptance evaluation of telemedical consultations provides insights into the people’s attitudes and allows to outline an acceptance research agenda as well as next steps within the project.

Quick Abstract

Recently, travelers increasingly book trips that combine public transportation with emerging mobility modes such as ride-sharing. Mobility service platforms aim to integrate this heterogeneous mobility mix on a single software platform. In practice, only first appearances of collaborations between public transit companies and ride-sharing companies have emerged so far. Especially with the coming emergence of autonomous vehicles, ride-sharing services will become a vital mobility mode as part of Mobility-as-a-Service schemes. Therefore, this study aims to research the requirements for integrating ride-sharing services into a mobility service platform from a user-centered and technical perspective. For this, we first analyzed the overall attitude towards autonomous ride-sharing in a citizen workshop and evaluated a prototype of the system in a small user study. Additionally, we conceptually integrated the service into an existing reference platform for mobility services and investigated the technical and operational differences between public transportation and ride-sharing services. The analysis shows that autonomous ride-sharing services are integrable into a mobility service platform but have distinct requirements that other mobility services such as scooter-sharing or public transit do not have.

Due to a rise in novel mobility modes, urban transportation systems have become more heterogeneous and complicated in recent years. Mobility Service Platforms integrate different mobility services to offer integrated travel information, booking, and travel assistance, regardless of mobility provider or mode. Traditionally, users access these information systems through graphical user interfaces. Especially for the older population, such a sophisticated information system for a complex problem is problematic. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an approach and a prototype for a natural language interface for Mobility Service Platforms. The natural language interface allows access to the Mobility Service Platforms’ information systems and integrates other domains, such as event and place information into natural language queries. To this end, we introduce a simple unified data model for travel, event, and Point of Interest domain and design an interaction model for the natural language interface. We evaluate the prototype in a case study with potential users. The evaluation shows that most users are more comfortable interacting with a mobility service platform using natural language instead of using different graphical user interfaces providing similar functionality.

User Acceptance of Lifelogging Technologies: The Power of Experience and Technological Self-Efficacy

Today, innovations in the field of lifelogging technology and its assistance in everyday life enable different users to gain an overview of different areas of their lives. Especially for older and frail people, lifelogging offers useful solutions that allow them to stay longer in their private environment and maintain their autonomy. Although lifelogging is already used in many contexts, opinions of users on the different lifelogging applications and the influence of user characteristics on their acceptance still remain underexplored. In this study, we investigate the acceptance of lifelogging technology for activities of daily living and examine the impact of user characteristics on its key determinants according to the Technology Acceptance Model, which is used as a theoretical background. For data collection we used a quantitative online survey and took opinions of N=209 German adults into consideration in the statistical analyses. Our findings demonstrate that an already existing experience with lifelogging is the main influencing factor for user acceptance: High levels of the experience and technological self-efficacy in handling of the technology significantly enhance the acceptance of lifelogging for activities of daily living, while age and gender shape the acceptance indirectly. This study contributes to the user acceptance research of lifelogging in private environments, and our findings deepen the understanding of how adoption of lifelogging technologies is shaped by different users.

Within an aging society, characterized by increasing numbers of older people in need of assistance and care with a simultaneous shortage of professional caregivers, new ways and innovations have to be developed to facilitate life in older age. Assisting lifelogging technologies have the potential to support older and frail people, but also caregivers in their everyday lives. These assisting lifelogging technologies require the acceptance of future users to reach a sustainable adoption. As research has focused mostly on country-specific analyses so far, a cross-cultural and -national investigation of users’ lifelogging technology acceptance in older age is necessary. Therefore, an online survey study (N = 1123) examined perceptions regarding aging, care, and lifelogging technology usage, focusing on the perspective of potential users originated from five different countries: Germany, Sweden, Canada, Italy, and Spain. The results revealed significant differences between the countries regarding attitudes towards aging and care as well as perceptions and acceptance of lifelogging technologies. The insights identify the cultural background of potential users as a relevant impacting parameter and should be considered when technologies are developed and tailored to the needs of specific user groups.
