Quick Abstract

Mobile applications have the potential to improve the quality of care received by patients from their primary care physicians (PCP). They can allow doctors to access the information they need when and where they need it in order to make informed decisions regarding patients’ health. They can also allow patients to better control conditions such as Diabetes and Gaucher’s disease. However, there are a number of limitations to these devices, such as small screen sizes and limited processing power, which can produce cognitive overload which in turn can negatively impact upon the decision making processes. This paper introduces a new research direction which aims to predict, during the development of mobile health care applications, when cognitive overload is likely to occur. By identifying the user’s previous level of experience, their working memory, the complexity of the interface and the level of distraction imposed by the user’s context, a prediction can be made as to when cognitive overload is likely to occur.

Quick Abstract

User modelling in interactive Web systems is an essential quality to optimally filter, personalise and adapt their content and functionality to serve the intrinsic needs of individual users. The mechanism for obtaining the user model needs to be intelligent, adaptive and transparent to the user, in the sense that user experience should not be disrupted or compromised. Human factors are extensively employed lately for enriching user models by capturing more intrinsic perceptual characteristics of the users. Accordingly, this paper proposes the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for attaining cognitive styles of users in adaptive interactive systems. One of the main benefits is the automatic prediction of cognitive typologies of users by avoiding psychometric tests, which are among the typical ways of constructing user profiles and are particularly time-consuming. Furthermore, ANNs can efficiently model the relationship between cognitive styles and user interaction. The experimental setup and the results obtained show that ANNs are suitable for predicting the cognitive styles ratio of users in respect to their actual cognitive style ratio value.

Quick Abstract

Social network portals, such as Facebook and Twitter, often discover and deliver relevant social data to a user’s query, considering only system-oriented conflicting objectives (e.g., time, energy, recall) and frequently ignoring the satisfaction of the individual “needs” of the query user w.r.t. its perceptual preference characteristics (e.g., data comprehensibility, working memory). In this paper, we introduce User-centric Social Network (USN), a novel framework that deals with the conflicting system-oriented objectives of the social network in the context of Multi-Objective Optimization and utilizes user-oriented objectives in the query dissemination/ acquisition process to facilitate decision making. We present the initial design of the USN framework and its major components. Our preliminary evaluation with real datasets shows that USN enhances the usability and satisfaction of the user while in parallel provides optimal system-choices for network performance.

Quick Abstract

Mass customization should be more than just configuring a specific component (hardware or software), but should be seen as the co-design of an entire system, including services, experiences and human satisfaction at the individual as well as at the community level. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a framework for the automatic reconstruction of Web content based on human factors. Human factors and users’ characteristics play the most important role during the entire design and implementation of the framework which has the inherent ability to interact with its environment and the user and transparently adapt its behaviour using intelligent techniques, reaching high levels of usability, user satisfaction, effectiveness and quality of service presentation. The initial results of the evaluation have proven that the proposed framework do not degrade the efficiency (in terms of speed and accuracy) during the Web content adaptation process.

Quick Abstract

Coping with the initial and finest systems’ functionality and performance is indeed one of the major problems nowadays, due to the rapid increase and continuous change of customer demands. Hence, it is crucial to move on with a research analysis in an attempt to identify whether documentation, the most reliable source for preserving a software system’s quality over the years, is properly created, updated and used in Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) operating in small EU markets, focusing both on the development process and the maintenance activities. Henceforth, the main objective of this paper is to propose a minimum documentation set required to fulfill both the Software Engineering principles and the SME practical needs by comparing literature suggestions with empirical findings. In further support of our documentation set suggestion, we present and discuss the results of a small survey conducted in nine IT-oriented SME in Cyprus and Greece.

Quick Abstract

The explosive growth in the size and use of the World Wide Web as a communication medium has been enthusiastically adopted by the mass market to provide an electronic connection between progressive businesses and millions of customers bringing to light the eBusiness sector. However, the nature of most Web structures is static and complicated, and users often lose sight of the goal of their inquiry. Hence, practitioners need to alleviate any navigational difficulties and satisfy the heterogeneous needs of the users to allow web applications of this nature to survive. Main emphasis is given at saving costs, improving efficiency and growth, competitiveness, expanding markets, create new infrastructures to support B2B and B2C Web activities and creating more business opportunities, for local and regional governments. This paper presents the research implications and challenges of the Web Personalization concept as an enabler of eBusiness Services sustainability with the development of Personalized Intelligent User Interfaces and processes.
