Quick Abstract

In this paper the problem of assigning check-in counters to flights in a Zone of Lisbon airport is addressed at an early stage. Real traffic scenario and simulation of passengers behaviour and characteristics are considered. The aim is to minimize an objective function that takes into consideration the managing cost of opening check-in counters and the passengers’ cost of waiting to be served by the check-in operator. This latter cost function has been modelled by considering the International Air Transport Association level of service perceived by the passengers. Since the performances depend on the passengers’ behaviour and characteristics, simulation is used to compute the value of the objective function. Two optimization heuristic procedures have been tested and their results compared.

Quick Abstract

We present FLOWMATRIX, a system for the interactive exploration of time-labeled multivariate flows between pairs of geographic locations. FLOWMATRIX offers a coordinated visualization based on the interplay between a geographic map and a matrix that allow to discover trends tied to specific locations while offering an overview of metrics of the flows between all pairs of locations. The input data is clustered following a geographic hierarchy and the user can navigate between different levels of detail. The design of our system privileges the execution of simple tasks like assessing the volume and features of the flows between pairs of locations, enumerating destinations with poor performance, and sorting flow streams based on their volume.

Quick Abstract

Selecting and sequencing a set of Learning Objects (LOs) to build a course may turn out to be quite a challenging task. In this paper we focus on such an aspect, related to the verification and respect of the relationships of pedagogical dependence existing between two LOs added to a course (meaning that if a given LO has another one as “pre-requisite”, then any sequencing of the LOs in the course will need to have the latter LO taken by the learners before of the former). In our approach the sequencing of LOs in the course can still be managed by the instructor, basing on her/his taste and preferences, yet s/he can also be helped by a set of suggestions, related to the pre-requisite relationships existing among the LOs selected for the course. Such suggestions (such relationships, in effect) can be computed automatically and provide the instructor with significant help and guidance. We show a light-weight formalization of the LO, and how it can be “represented” by a set of WikiPedia Pages (“topics”); then we show how such set of topics, together with a set of relevant hypotheses we previously defined, can help establish the dependence relationship existing between two LOs. In this endeavor we exploit the classification in categories available for the WikiPedia topics, and obtain interesting results for our framework, in terms of precision and recall of the dependence relationships.

Quick Abstract

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) offers three dimensional images of tissue microstructures. Although OCT imaging offers a promising high resolution method, due to the low coherent light source used in the configuration of OCT, OCT images suffers from an artefact called, speckle. Speckle deteriorates the image quality and effects image analysis algorithm such as segmentation and pattern recognition. We present a novel and intelligent speckle reduction algorithm to reduce speckle based on an ensemble framework of Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks. We tested the algorithm on images of retina obtained from a spectrometer-based Fourier-domain OCT system operating at 890 nm, and observed considerable improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio and contrast of the images.

Quick Abstract

On October 19, 2014 Matteo Miceli, a known Italian oceanic sailor, left the Port of Riva di Traiano (Rome, IT) with the sailboat ECO40, an Italian vessel, for the Roma Ocean World Project. This ambitious challenge consists in a non-stop sailing alone around the World in energy and food self-sufficiency. ECO40 is a Class 40 oceanic vessel (LOA of 12,0 m) that has been equipped with a data acquisition system for both the metocean parameters recorded on-board (i.e. apparent and real wind speed and wind direction, atmospheric pressure, current velocity, air and sea temperature, etc.) and the kinematic characteristics of the boat itself (i.e. speed and course over ground). Furthermore, the boat has been equipped with a three high precision GPS receivers, provided by Leica Geosystem, for measuring the movements of the boat and with an inertial platform. Due to these high-precision instruments it has been possible to fully measure and characterize the six degrees of freedom of the boat, and accordingly to use the boat as a “sailing wave buoy”. In this paper we present the first analysis of the met-ocean data measured by the boat during the storm occurred in the Gulf of Lion on October 21-22, 2014 that ECO40 faced just few days after its departure.

Quick Abstract

We consider the task of visually exploring relationships (such as established connections, similarity, reachability, etc) among a set of georeferenced entities, i.e., entities that have geographic data associated with them. A novel 2.5D paradigm is proposed that provides a robust and practical solution based on separating and then integrating back again the networked and geographical dimensions of the input dataset. This allows us to easily cope with partial or incomplete geographic annotations, to reduce cluttering of close entities, and to address focus-plus-context visualization issues. Typical application domains include, for example, coordinating search and rescue teams or medical evacuation squads, monitoring ad-hoc networks, exploring location-based social networks and, more in general, visualizing relational datasets including geographic annotations.

Focused crawling is increasingly seen as a solution to increase the freshness and coverage of local repository of documents related to specific topics by selectively traversing paths on the web. The adaptation is a peculiar feature that makes it possible to modify the search strategies according to the particular environment, its alterations and its relationships with the given input parameters during the search. This paper introduces a general evaluation framework for adaptive focused crawlers.

Payment schemes based on mobile devices are expected to supersede traditional electronic payment approaches in the next few years. However, current solutions are limited in that protocols require at least one of the two parties to be on-line, i.e. connected either to a trusted third party or to a shared database. Indeed, in cases where customer and vendor are persistently or intermittently disconnected from the network, any on-line payment is not possible. This paper introduces FORCE, a novel mobile micro payment approach where all involved parties can be fully off-line. Our solution improves over state-of-the-art approaches in terms of payment flexibility and security. In fact, FORCE relies solely on local data to perform the requested operations. Present paper describes FORCE architecture, components and protocols. Further, a thorough analysis of its functional and security properties is provided showing its effectiveness and viability.

Quick Abstract

The present work documents the study on the usage of Neural Networks to compute the parameters used in solar panel modelling. The approach followed starts from a dataset obtained by a process of model identification via numerical solution of nonlinear equations. After a preliminary analysis pointing out the intrinsic difficulty in the classic identification of the parameters via NN, by taking advantage of closed form relations, a hybrid neural system, composed by neural network based identifiers and explicit equations, was implemented. The generalization capabilities of the neural identifier were investigated, showing the effectiveness of this approach.

Quick Abstract

In the last decade, social bookmarking services have gained popularity as a way of annotating and categoriz- ing a variety of different web resources. The idea behind this work is to exploit such services for enhancing traditional query expansion techniques. Specifically, the system we propose relies on three-dimensional co- occurrence matrices, where the further dimension is introduced to represent categories of terms sharing the same semantic property. Such categories, named semantic classes, are related to the folksonomy mined from social bookmarking services such as Delicious, Digg, and StumbleUpon. The paper illustrates a comparative experimental evaluation on real datasets, such as the one collected by the Open Directory Project and the TREC 2004. We also include the results of a specific disambiguation analysis aimed to evaluate the effective- ness of our approach in comparison with state-of-the-art techniques when satisfying queries characterized by polysemic and ambiguous terms.
