We present an algorithm for mesh alignment by performing Principal Components Analysis (PCA) on a set of nodes of a regular 3D grid. The use of a 3D lattice external to both inputs increases the robustness of PCA, particularly when dealing with meshes of different and possibly uneven vertex density. The proposed algorithm was tested on meshes that have undergone standard mesh processing operations such as smoothing, simplification and remeshing. In several cases the results indicate an improved robustness compared to performing PCA directly on mesh vertices.

Checkpointing is a fault-tolerance mechanism commonly used in High Throughput Computing (HTC) environments to allow the execution of long-running computational tasks on compute resources subject to hardware and software failures and interruptions from resource owners. With increasing scrutiny of the energy consumption of IT infrastructures, it is important to understand the impact of checkpointing on the energy consumption of HTC environments. In this paper we demonstrate through trace-driven simulation on real-world datasets that existing checkpointing strategies are inadequate at maintaining an acceptable level of energy consumption whilst reducing the makespan of tasks. Furthermore, we identify factors important in deciding whether to employ checkpointing within an HTC environment, and propose novel strategies to curtail the energy consumption of checkpointing approaches.

The architecture of an UWB multi-band channel sounder is presented. The sounder architecture provides an FMCW source to enable measurements in the frequency range up to 1 GHz (which covers the TV white space / digital dividend), the 2.2 – 2.9 GHz band (ISM and LTE) and the 4.4 – 5.9 GHz band (ISM / WiLAN). Additional frequency converters support operation in the 16 GHz and 60 GHz bands. Here we have configured a 2 by 2 MIMO system in the 60 GHz band specifically targeting channel measurements to support the development of on-body networks and short range backhaul communication networks. Performance results in the 2.4 GHz ISM band demonstrate the resolution of the sounder.

This paper is concerned with possible future internet applications within the framework of traffic flow modelling and control. Two modelling related uses are described based on the assumption that vehicles in the near future will be equipped with smart on-board devices that can communicate with each other through reliable ad-hoc wireless networks. This capability opens new ways of thinking about traffic flow and requires the explicit consideration of the drivers’ behaviour when more information is available to them pertaining to downstream traffic conditions. Finally, a web-based application for supporting ramp metering is discussed as well.

Context: Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs) need to employ a search process that is as complete as possible. It has been suggested that an existing set of known papers can be used to help develop an appropriate strategy. However, it is still not clear how to evaluate the completeness of the resulting search process. Aim: We suggest a means of assessing the completeness of a search process by evaluating the search results on an independent set of known papers. Method: We assess the results of a search process developed using a known set of papers by seeing whether it was able to identify papers from a different set of known papers. Results: Using a second set of known papers, we were able to show that a search process, which was based on a first set of known papers, was unlikely to be complete, even though the search process found all the papers in the first known set. Conclusions: When using a set of known papers to develop a search process, keep a “hold-out” sample to evaluate probable completeness.

Background: Centralized Online Reputation Systems (ORS) have been widely used by internet companies. They collect users’ opinions on products, transactions and events as reputation information then aggregate and publish the information to the public. Aim: Studies of reputation systems evaluation to date have tended to focus on isolated systems or their aggregating algorithms only. This paper proposes an evaluation mechanism to measure different reputation systems in the same context. Method: Reputation systems naturally have differing interfaces, and track different aspects of user behavior, however, from information system perspective, they all share five underlying components: Input, Processing, Storage, Output and Feedback Loop. Therefore, reputation systems can be divided into these five components and measured by their properties respectively. Results: The paper concentrates on the evaluation of Input and develops a set of simple formulas to represent the cost of reputation information collection. This is then applied to three different sites and the resulting analysis shows the pros and cons of the differing approaches of each of these sites.
