Quick Abstract

Businesses with enterprise-level workloads - such as Systems Applications and Products (SAP) workloads - require business level resiliency including high availability, clustering, or physical server appliances. To enable businesses to use enterprise workloads in a cloud, the IBM Cloud Managed Services (CMS) cloud offers many SAP enterprise-level workloads for both virtualized and non-virtualized cloud environments. Based on our experience with enabling resiliency for enterprise-level workloads like SAP and Oracle, we realize that as the end-to-end process is quite cumbersome, complex and expensive. Therefore, it would be highly beneficial for the customers and the cloud providers to have a systematic business resiliency framework in place, which would very well fit the cloud model with appropriate level of abstraction, automation, while allowing the desired cost benefits. In this paper, we introduce an end-to-end business resiliency framework and resiliency life cycle. We further introduce an algorithm to determine the optimal resiliency pattern for enterprise applications using a diverse set of platforms in the IBM CMS cloud offering.

Quick Abstract

Cloud environments offer flexibility, elasticity, and low cost compute infrastructure. Electronic health records (EHRs) require infrastructure which is regulated under several IT compliances with security and data persistence and restore. To enable customers to bring sensitive medical data in the cloud, we enabled the IBM Watson Health Cloud (WHC) for compliance with the U.S. federal electronic health record regulation. This paper briefly outlines how we create HIPAA- (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant cloud computing. We focus on the privacy and security rules for protecting Protected Health Information (PHI) and use data encryption for data-in-motion and data-at-rest. To meet HIPAA requirements for data persistence, we implement data back-ups, archiving service and disaster recovery plan. In this paper, we discuss various challenges and lessons learned for implementing the diverse set of compliance features required by HIPAA in the IBM WHC cloud.

Cloud environments offer flexibility, elasticity, and low cost compute infrastructure. These features are often not part of a typical cloud offering, and as a result, businesses are forced to run enterprise workloads in their legacy environments. To enable enterprise customers to use these workloads in a cloud, we enabled a large number of SAP and Oracle workloads in the IBM Cloud Managed Services (CMS) for both virtualized and non-virtualized cloud environments. In this paper, we discuss the challenges in enabling enterprise class applications in the cloud based on our experience on providing a diverse set of platforms implemented in the IBM CMS offering.

Quick Abstract

CloudFoundry (CF) provides an open source platform-as-a-service software for deploying scalable software systems to the cloud. The architecture for CF is distributed by design and consists of several components which interact with one another through a message-oriented middleware. This message-oriented distributed design delivers on the scalability and resiliency requirements of the platform. In such a complex distributed multicomponent system, there is a steep learning curve for software developers to understand how components interact, what messages are exchanged between them, and how the message exchanges affect the behaviour of the system. In particular developers find it difficult to identify the execution flows, the authentication flows, interactions with the persistence layer, etc. We have developed a framework that allows interpreting the behaviour of the system by analyzing the exchanged messages between components, inspecting message contents, and extracting data and control flow across components. The paramount aim is to improve developers’ understandability of the system and to examine software resiliency through approaches like bug injection and message alterations. An initial version of our framework was released to the CF community and we have collected feedback that indeed show that we are achieving some of our goals.

Quick Abstract

In this paper, we outline and illustrate concepts that are essential to achieve fast, highly scalable virtual machine planning and failover at the Virtual Machine (VM) level in a data center containing a large number of servers, VMs, and disks. To illustrate the concepts a solution is implemented and analyzed for IBM’s Cloud Managed Services enterprise cloud. The solution enables at-failover-time planning, and keeps the recovery time within tight service level agreement (SLA) allowed time budgets via parallelization of recovery activities. The initial serial failover time was reduced for an order of magnitude due to parallel VM restart, and to parallel VM restart combined with parallel storage device remapping.

Quick Abstract

Cloud computing is becoming more and more popular in computing infrastructure and it also introduces new security problems. For example, a physical server shared by many virtual machines can be taken over by an attacker if the virtual machine monitor is compromised through one of the virtual machines. Thus, collocating with vulnerable virtual machines, or “bad neighbours”, on the same physical server introduces additional security risks. Moreover, the connections between virtual machines, such as the network connection between a web server and its back end database server, are natural paths of attacks. Therefore, both virtual machine placement and connections among virtual machines in the cloud have great impact over the overall security of cloud. In this paper, we quantify the security risks of cloud environments based on virtual machine vulnerabilities and placement schemes. Based on our security evaluation, we develop techniques to generate virtual machine placement that can minimize the security risks considering the connections among virtual machines. According to the experimental results, our approach can greatly improve the survivability of most virtual machines and the whole cloud. The computing costs and deployment costs of our techniques are also practical.

Quick Abstract

We propose a low-complexity encoding strategy for efficient compression of biomedical signals. At the heart of our approach is the combination of non-uniform signal sampling together with sample quantization to improve the source coding efficiency. We propose to jointly extract and quantize information (data samples) most relevant to the application processing the incoming data in the backend unit. The proposed joint sampling and quantization method maximizes a user-defined utility metric under system resource constraints such as maximum transmission rate or encoding computational complexity. We illustrate this optimization problem on electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, using the Percentage Root-mean-square Difference (PRD) metric as the utility function measuring the distortion between the original signal and its reconstructed (inverse quantization and linear interpolation) version. Experiments conducted on the MIT-BIH ECG corpus using the well-accepted FAN algorithm as the non-uniform sampling method show the effectiveness of our joint strategy: Same PRD as ’FAN alone’ at half the data rate for less than three times the (low) computational complexity of FAN alone.

IT service management requires the management of heterogeneous artifacts such as configuration items with differing lifecycles and complex interrelationships. Lifecycle management in such environments is critical in providing feedback and control between processes and sustaining communication and synchronization between and within processes while maintaining the integrity of the configuration item database (CMDB). We propose a method for managing lifecycles of multiple types, with automated methods for inheritance of lifecycles, authorization of state changes, propagation of state changes through relationships, and dynamic lifecycle updates.

Quick Abstract

In larger enterprises, business documents are typically stored in disparate, autonomous content repositories with various formats. Efficient search and retrieval mechanisms are needed to deal with the heterogeneousness and complexity of this environment. This paper presents a general architecture and two industrial implementations of a service-based information system to perform search in Lotus Notes databases and data sources with Web service interfaces. The first implementation is based on a federated database system that maps the various schemas of the sources into a common interface and aggregates information from their native locations. This implementation offers the advantages of scalability and accessibility to real-time information. The second one is based on a one-index enterprise-scale search engine that crawls, parses and indexes the document contents from the sources. This latter implementation offers the ability of scoring the relevance ranking of documents and eliminating duplications in search results. The relative merits and limitations of both implementations will be presented.

Quick Abstract

As business information is made available via the intranet and Internet, there is a growing need to quickly analyze the resulting mountain of information to infer business insights. For instance, analyzing a company’s patent database against another’s to find the patents that are cross-licensable. IBM Research’s Business Insight Workbench (BIW) is a text mining and analytics tool that allows end-users to explore, understand, and analyze business information in order to come up with such insight. However, the first incarnation of BIW used a thick-client architecture with a database back-end. While very successful, the architecture caused limitations in the tool’s flexibility, scalability, and deployment. In this paper we discuss our initial experiences in converting BIW into a modern Service-Oriented Architecture. We also provide some insights into our design choices and also outline some lessons learned.
