Quick Abstract

Business process models have become key artifacts to represent how work is performed in organisations. Therefore organisations maintain large process model repositories, containing complex models that are difficult to be managed. Abstraction is a means to reduce the size and complexity of such process models and ease the process model management. It is worthwhile noticing that several abstraction mechanisms exist in the literature but none of them includes activities-paths, data, roles, artifacts and messages in the abstraction procedure. To this end we present a conceptual framework that utilizes abstraction rules in order to simplify business process models. The proposed framework is well suited for complex BPMN process models and is built on our previous work where process abstraction rules had been introduced. This abstraction framework is designed with focus on retaining the overall structure of the process model, but most of all it is designed to treat different process elements (eg. data, messages, roles, etc.) other than activities as abstraction objects. A real business case that is originated from the financial services sector is used as an attempt to exemplify and validate the proposed mechanism.

Quick Abstract

The elicitation of affect can be regarded as an influencing factor upon a person’s cognition, emotional state, mood, attention and motivation. It is also recognizable as an inhibited physiological process expressed by the human brain as induced or suppressed hormonal and neural stimulation that subsequently instigates a physical and mental level of attentiveness attractiveness or aversiveness. Physical reactions to emotion causing events and stimuli in affective computing are classified by direct mapping of facial and postural expressions to corresponding patterns, by using visual and postural observation methods. Despite the fact that physiological assessment is generally more reliable and less error-prone, a higher amount of research has been devoted to visual and postural methods due to the greater complexity and specific knowledge requirements of the former. Concentrating more on the physiological aspect of assessing affect, we have developed a biofeedback device, sensing reactions instigated by emotion-causing events and results have been assessed in real-time using suitable visualization methods. In previous attempts to acquire this type of measurements, human subjects were physically and psychologically impaired by the electrodes and wiring attachments used for the acquisition of signals and therefore validity of data was to some extent in question. In order to achieve an uncompromising assessment environment we designed a system that acquires heart rate and stress measurements via an ordinarily looking computer mouse. Certain combinations of heart rate precipitation and tonic level / phasic response of stress levels were investigated as reactions to emotion-inducing events. Corresponding patterns of physiological measurements to a real time affect allocation model have reached interesting correlations of events with respective states of engagement to an impressive degree of coincidence.

Quick Abstract

Although frontier techniques have been used to measure healthcare efficiency, their utility in decision making process is limited by both methodological questions concerning their application. The present paper aims to examine the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) results in order to facilitate a common understanding about the adequacy of these methods. A two-stage bootstrap DEA method and the Translog formula of the SFA were performed. Multi-inputs and multi-outputs were used in both of the approaches assuming two scenarios either including environmental variables or not. Thirty-two Greek public hospital units constitute the sample. The main output of the analysis was that the efficiency scores increased with the incorporation of environmental variables. Moreover, environmental variables being hospital status and geographical position were found significantly correlating with inefficiency, while patient mobility was not found strongly correlating. DEA and SFA were found to yield divergent efficiency estimates due to the nature of the environmental variables and the measurement error. The analysis concludes that there is a need for careful attention by stakeholders since the nature of the data and its availability influence the measurement of the efficiency and thus it is necessary to be specific when choosing the mathematical form.

Quick Abstract

This study is devoted to the qualitative analysis of dialogues conducted between students in a modern learning platform in which students learn how to learn together, argue and construct plans to resolve problems concerning scientific matters. The challenge-based scenario used in this research is related to the “Shots”. We are interested in the way students interact when using two types of pedagogical tools (Planning Tool, Argumentation Tool) in the Metafora Platform, as well as through Face to Face Communication. Results of analysis demonstrate that verbal communication has a coherent structure, when groups try to resolve the common challenge through the Argumentation Tool.

Quick Abstract

In this paper, we present a perceptual-based encoding benchmarking of the H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) inter-frame prediction variable block sizes for various spatial and temporal contents. This paper in order to quantify the impact on the video quality of the AVC inter-frame variable block sizes and the responsible prediction algorithm has disabled the motion estimation mechanism of the encoder and manually each block size is selected. Thus each time only one available block size out of the total seven is available to be searched for each MB and it is possible to examine the video quality impact of each block size independently to the remaining ones. The scope of this paper is to study if the use of sophisticated predictions algorithms and variable block sizes enhance the perceived quality of the encoded video signal or if there is not any significant quality degradation when the option of variable size is disabled.

Quick Abstract

As Science and Mathematics teaching and learning in Europe decays, the Metafora project offers a proposal for the promotion of a new pedagogy based on online social learning through the use of the platform’s tools. Our Pilot study aimed at exploring how students can enhance their science learning by engaging in meaning generation processes using the Metafora tools. These processes include making sense of motion in Newtonian space using one of the tools, the 3D Juggler Microworld. The students also engaged in group discussion and argumentation using Lasad and collaborative planning of actions using the Planning tool of the Metafora platform. The role of the tools is promising in enhancing students’ scientific meaning making. Yet, further research is needed in exploitting the tools’ potential to contribute in collaborative, social learning and enhance the learning climate with an emphasis on togetherness which seems to be missing from our schools.

Within the currently forming pervasive computing environment, services and information sources thrive. Instantiations of the service oriented computing paradigm, e.g. Web, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and Grid services, are continuously emerging, whilst information can be collected from several information sources, e.g. materializations of the Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 trends, Social Networking apps and Sensor Networks. Within this context the development of adaptable service oriented processes utilizing heterogeneous services, in addition to available information, is an emerging trend. This paper presents an approach and an enabling architecture that leverage the provision of data-driven, adaptable, heterogeneous service processes. Core within the proposed architecture is a set of interacting components that accommodate the acquisition of information, the execution of service chains and their adaptation, based on collected information.

Predictive decision making increases the individual or joint gain of negotiators, and has been extensively studied. One particular skill of predicting agents is the forecast of their opponents’ future offers. Current systems focus on enhancing learning techniques in the decision making module of negotiating agents, with the purpose to develop more robust systems. Empirical studies are conducted in bounded problem spaces, where data distribution is known or assumed. Our proposal concentrates on the incorporation of learning structures in agents’ decision making, capable of forecasting opponents’ future offers even in open problem spaces, which is the case in most negotiation situations.

Quick Abstract

Routinization is a technique of knowledge exploitation based on the repetition of acts. When applied to negotiations it results the substitution of parts or even whole processes, disembarrassing negotiators from significant deliberation and decision making effort. Although it has an important impact on negotiators, the risk of establishing ineffective routines is evident. In our paper we discuss weaknesses and limitations and we propose a generic framework to address them. We consider routines as evolving processes and we take two orientations. The first concerns a communicative dimension to allow for external evaluation of the applied routines and the second concerns enforcement of the system core with evolving structure that adjusts to routine changes and flexibly incorporates new knowledge.
