Abstract

In some manufacturing industries, the task of assembling two parts is a time-consuming step in production. Bonding can be more or less easy depending on the parts relative geometry. In this case, it becomes interesting to carefully choose the two pieces to be paired among available parts. As one does not know exactly the geometrical characteristics of the items that will be produced in the future, the problem of wisely choosing, over the long haul, the pairs to be bonded is dynamic. Minimizing the cost of pairing operation can be formulated as a dynamic linear assignment problem. This paper presents different heuristics used to solve the dynamic linear assignment problem in the framework of a specific application in the aeronautics industry. The article highlights how strong characteristics of the case study are used to choose adapted heuristics.
