Factors Influencing Physiotherapist’s Intention to Use a Novel Physical Exercise Communication System in NeuroRehabilitation

Abstract

Background: A web-based communication platform for physical neuro-rehabilitation (MobileMovement, Sunnaas Rehabilitation Hospital) was developed in concept. The goal is that this interactive feedback system can secure effective physical exercise when these are performed without the physiotherapist present, both at the hospital and at home or in the gym, and to give the (physio)therapist the opportunity to follow up the patients’ exercise adherence and adjust the exercises and -plans if necessary. Aim: to investigate to what degree different domains relate to therapists’ Intention to Use the MobileMovement platform. Method: mTAM (Gagnon et al, 2012) questionnaires were distributed during a plenary session, where responses to statements were given on a 1-7 likert scale. Spearman's corr.coeff was extracted between domains. Participants (n=36) were 75% women, mean age 39.9 (SD=11.4). Results: The highest median score was Attitude(Att) with 5.75 (Q1,Q3=5.0,6.0), and the lowest was Habit(Hab) with 3.83 (Q1,Q3=3.3,5.7). Remaining median scores were between 4.50-5.33. Spearmans' Corr. Coeff. were moderate, ranging from ,442 (p=,007) between Facilitators(Fac) and Att to ,814 (p=,000) between Percieved Usefulness (PU) and Att. Att and Fac had correlations to Intention to Use (Int) of ,527 (p=,001), ,596 (p=,000) respectively. Discussion and conclusion: Therapists were generally positive to the concept. Att correlates well with Int, as does Fac, indicating that these are important factors in Int. The system has the potential to facilitate effective physical rehabilitation in neurological patients, but facilitators and habits in the clinical setting should be taken into consideration for succeessful implementation.
