Abstract

This paper presents varying dimensional particle swarm optimizers for design of switching signals in circuits and systems. The particle position and dimension correspond to the switching phase and the number of switches, respectively. The dimension can vary depending on an objective function in the search process, i.e., the number of switches is adjustable automatically. The algorithm is defined for a multi-objective problem described by the hybrid fitness consisting of analog functions and digital logic. The algorithm is defined in a general form and the performance is investigated in an example: design of a switching signal for single phase inverters with a two-objective problem corresponding to total harmonic distortion and power sufficiency.
