Abstract

Simulation has proved to be a useful tool in healthcare operational management, although up until now does not appear to have reached its full potential within this area. An area in which simulation is increasingly useful is as in aiding decision making of healthcare managers when planning constructing new Emergency Departments or making changes to existing ones. A simulation based on Agent Based Modelling techniques is proposed with an aim to produce a Decision Support System that takes into account the human and social factors present within such departments and that can also be generalised to be used in multiple hospitals. Work on the creation of this model has already began, with many of its concepts and structures presented.
