Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2013) which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). ICPRAM 2013 was held in cooperation with the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The hallmark of this conference is to encourage theory and practice to meet in a single venue. The International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, engineers and practitioners in the areas of Pattern Recognition. Contributions describing applications of Pattern Recognition techniques to real-world problems, interdisciplinary research, experimental and/or theoretical studies yielding new insights that advance Pattern Recognition methods are our focus, to spur new research lines and provide the occasion to start novel collaborations. In many respects, there is still a frequent distance between more theoretical and more application oriented researchers. However, theory finds a significant test bed in practical applications, while any technological design must rely on solid theoretical foundations. We hope to support a fruitful exchange of expertise and opinions. The Conference Program includes oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in two parallel tracks: “Theory and Methods” and “Applications”. It also includes oral presentations from two Special Sessions chaired by prestigious researchers in their corresponding areas. ICPRAM received 180 paper submissions from 43 countries, in all continents. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified researchers in ICPRAM topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, only 66 papers were selected for oral presentation (23 full papers and 43 short papers) and 40 papers were selected for poster presentation. The full paper acceptance ratio was about 13%, and the total oral acceptance ratio (including full papers and short papers) was close to 37%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to grow over the next years. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SciTePress Digital Library. A short list of presented papers will be selected so that revised and extended versions of these papers will be published by Springer-Verlag in a AISC Series book. A "Best Paper Award" and a "Best Student Paper Award" will be conferred to the author(s) of a full paper presented at the conference. These will be selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined marks achieved from paper reviewing, assessed by the Program Committee, and paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. We are especially proud of the four plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Alberto Sanfeliu (Universitat Politècnica de Cataluyna, Spain), Tomaso Poggio (CBCL, McGovern Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States), Mário Figueiredo (Technical University of Lisbon - IST, Portugal) and Bikash Sabata (Ventana Medical Systems, United States). We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to warmly thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a hard task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. Conferences are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the Conference includes in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of February 17th (Sunday). We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in the lovely city of Barcelona. We hope to meet you again next year for the 3th ICPRAM, details of which will soon be available at http://www.icpram.org. (More)
