Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the third International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2014). Co-organized by the ESEO Group, this conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (ACM SIGAPP) and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). ICPRAM is also technically co-sponsored by the Portuguese Association for Pattern Recognition (APRP). The main goal of this conference is to encourage theory and practice to meet in a single venue. This is a more and more challenging task, due to the increasing applications of pattern recognition theories and methods in a widening range of fields. Furthermore, we can notice an equally increasing number of cases where multiple approaches are fused together to solve advanced problems. As an example, automatic motion estimation for pilotless airplanes (drones) requires to suitably exploit both vision based pattern recognition techniques, to evaluate the external setting, as well as the pattern of signals coming from different sensors. The International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, engineers and practitioners in all areas of Pattern Recognition. Contributions describing applications of Pattern Recognition techniques to real-world problems, interdisciplinary research, experimental and/or theoretical studies yielding new insights that advance Pattern Recognition methods are our focus, to spur new research lines and provide the occasion to start novel collaborations. In many respects, there is still a frequent distance between more theoretical and more application oriented researchers. However, theory finds a significant test bed in practical applications, while any technological design must rely on solid theoretical foundations. We hope to support a fruitful exchange of expertise and opinions. ICPRAM received 179 paper submissions from 44 countries, which demonstrates the success and global dimension of this conference. From these, 25 papers were published as full papers, 32 were accepted for short presentation and another 47 for poster presentation. These numbers, leading to a “full-paper” acceptance ratio of about 14% and an oral paper acceptance ratio close to 32%, show the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. The conference program includes a panel and four invited talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Harry Wechsler (George Mason University, United States), Josef Kittler (University of Surrey, United Kingdom), John Shawe-Taylor (University College London, United Kingdom); and Robert Zlot (CSIRO, Australia). The ICPRAM program also includes a Doctoral Consortium on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods that brought together Ph.D. students within the pattern recognition field to discuss their research in an international forum. We would like to thank the Doctoral Consortium Chair, Daniel Schang, for his collaboration in providing this added-value to ICPRAM. A "Best Paper Award" and a "Best Student Paper Award" will be conferred to the author(s) of a full paper presented at the conference. These will be selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined marks achieved from paper reviewing, assessed by the Program Committee, and paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. As in previous editions of the Conference, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and on the quality of presentations, a short list of authors will be selected and invited to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of ICPRAM 2014. A few papers will also be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a special issue of Elsevier Neurocomputing Journal. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time.
