Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence (ICAART 2024), held in Rome, Italy from 24 to 26 of February 2024. The conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). It is also technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and organized in cooperation with ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Ibero-American Society of Artificial Intelligence (IBERAMIA), and the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology (EUSFLAT). ICAART’s purpose is to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners interested in the theory and applications in the areas of Agents and Artificial Intelligence. Two simultaneous related tracks are reported, covering both applications and current research work. One track focuses on Agents, Multi-Agent Systems and Software Platforms, Distributed Problem Solving and Distributed AI in general. The other track focuses mainly on Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Representation, Planning, Learning, Scheduling, Perception, Reactive AI Systems, and Evolutionary Computing. This edition received 375 paper submissions from 51 countries, including special sessions, only 21% of which have been accepted as full papers, showing the intention of preserving a high-quality forum for the next editions of this conference. A double-blind paper review was performed for each submission by a Program Committee team of established researchers and domain experts. The conference program includes three keynote lectures given by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Antonio Chella (University of Palermo, Italy), Luis Fernando D'Haro Enriquez (Speech Technology Group, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain), and Pavan Duggal (Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Chairman, International Commission on Cyber Security Law India, and Chief Executive, Artificial Intelligence Law Hub, India). The conference is complemented with a Doctoral Consortium chaired by Ana Paula Rocha, a Special Session on AI with Awareness Inside (AWAI), chaired by Luc Steels and Giulio Prevedello, and a Special Session on Emotions and Affective Agents (EAA), chaired by Emilio Vivancos and Joaquin Taverner. We also have a session dedicated to Large Language Models (LLMs), online chaired by Roussanka Loukanova and in Rome by Ana Paula Rocha. As recognition for the best contributions, several awards based on the combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as assessed by session chairs at the conference venue, are conferred at the closing session of the conference. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all, to the authors, whose quality work forms the essence of this conference. Next, we thank all the members of the program committee and the auxiliary reviewers for their diligence and expert reviewing. Of course, we owe our sincere gratitude to the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, special thanks go to all the members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration is fundamental for the success of this conference. We hope to meet you again next year for the 17th ICAART, details of which will be available at the conference website. (More)
