Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2016). This conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and has the “in cooperation” status with the following organizations: ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (ACM SIGAPP), ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA), Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly (APNNA), International Neural Network Society (INNS), European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and Associação Portuguesa de Reconhecimento de Padrões (APRP). The main goal of this conference is to encourage theory and practice to meet in a single venue. This is a challenging task, due to the increasing number and variety of applications of pattern recognition theories and methods in a widening range of fields. Furthermore, in an equally increasing number of cases, either multiple approaches are combined to solve difficult problems, or approaches devised to solve a specific problem are extended beyond their initial formulation to address different research contexts. As an example, automatic motion estimation for pilotless airplanes (drones) requires combining vision-based pattern recognition techniques with signals coming from different sensors. ICPRAM aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all areas of pattern recognition, to spur new research lines and provide the occasion to start novel collaborations. The scope of ICPRAM encompasses contributions describing applications of pattern recognition techniques to real-world problems, theoretical studies yielding new insights that advance pattern recognition methods, and interdisciplinary research. Unfortunately, notwithstanding the tremendous advances, there is still a kind of distance between theoretical and more application-oriented researchers. However, our goal is to point out that theory finds a significant testbed in practical applications, while any technological design must rely on solid theoretical foundations. As in the previous editions of ICPRAM, we hope to continue supporting a fruitful exchange of expertise and opinions. ICPRAM received 125 submissions from 37 countries, 68 % of which were accepted. Out of the accepted papers, 23 were selected for oral presentation as full papers, 31 for oral presentation as short papers, and 31 as posters. The acceptance rate shows the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. The conference program includes a discussion panel and four invited talks by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Arun Ross (Michigan State University, United States), Ludmila Kuncheva (School of Computer Science, Bangor University, United Kingdom), Fabio Roli (Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy) and Tanja Schultz (Cognitive Systems Lab (CSL), University of Bremen, Germany). For the Theory & Methods area and for the Applications area, a "Best Paper Award" and a "Best Student Paper Award" will be given to the author(s) of selected full papers presented at the conference. The winning papers will be chosen by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined review marks, assessed by the Program Committee, and the paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference, and secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to warmly thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, special thanks to all the members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration was fundamental for the success of this conference. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in Rome, Italy. We hope to meet you again next year for the 6th edition of ICPRAM, details of which will soon be available at http://www.icpram.org. (More)
