Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Signal Processing and Multimedia Applications (SIGMAP 2021), which was sponsored and organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia. This year, SIGMAP is held as a web-based event from July 6-8, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of SIGMAP 2021, the International Conference on Signal Processing and Multimedia Applications, is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in information systems and applications, including theory and practice in various heterogeneous and interrelated fields including image, video and audio data processing, new sources of multimodal data (text, social, health, etc.) and Multimedia Applications related to representation, manipulation, storage, authentication and communication of multimedia data. Multimedia is a research field that includes computing methods in which different modalities are integrated and utilized, with the aim to take advantage from each data source. The high quality of the SIGMAP 2021 program is enhanced by three distinguished keynote lectures, delivered by renowned international experts in their fields: Amarnath Gupta ( University of California San Diego, United States), Henning Schulzrinne (United States) and Noel O’Connor (Dublin City University, Ireland) SIGMAP 2021 received high quality paper submissions from diverse countries and to evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members were carefully selected and are highly qualified researchers in SIGMAP topic areas. Based on the provided classifications, 4 papers were selected as full papers which led to a full paper acceptance ratio of 28%. This strict acceptance ratio shows the intention to preserve a high-quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. The SIGMAP conference series intends to be a meeting place where information exchange occurs and where collaboration projects emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library and a short list of papers will be selected and invited, to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of SIGMAP 2021. Also, a short list of papers presented will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a special issue of Springer Nature Computer Science Journal . We would like to express our thanks to all participants, and particularly to the authors, whose quality works provide the essence of this conference. Secondly, we owe gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for the excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. We hope that the papers accepted and included in the proceedings will be helpful references in future works for all those who need to address topics in any of the SIGMAP knowledge areas. We wish you all an inspiring conference and we hope to meet you next year for SIGMAP 2022, details of which will soon be available at http://www.sigmap.org/ (More)
