Foreword: Welcome to SIGMAP 2009 - the International Conference on Signal Processing and Multimedia Applications, which is held in Milan this year! As before, SIGMAP 2009 is integrated in the ICETE (International Conference on e-Business and Telecommunications) joint conference, which puts together four complementary conferences, namely, ICE-B, WINSYS, SECRYPT and SIGMAP, covering a broad range of related fields, including e-business, wireless networks and information systems, security and cryptography, signal processing and multimedia applications. The overall goal of ICETE is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in knowledge exchange and dissemination in some of the most exciting fields of information and communication technologies. The conference program includes keynote lectures, papers and poster presentations, giving a wide view on the corresponding technical areas. All tracks follow recent research and contributions not only from the Academia but also from the Industry addressing a diversity of communication environments. This is consistent with the conference proceedings which demonstrate many new and innovative solutions for e-business and telecommunication, clearly showing a high level of research activity in these areas. We would like to emphasize that ICETE 2009 includes several outstanding keynote lectures in areas which are very relevant, nowadays. These talks are presented by distinguished researchers who are internationally renowned experts in all ICETE areas, and contribute to heighten the overall quality of the Conference. ICETE has received 300 papers in total, with contributions from more than 50 different countries, from all continents, which demonstrates the success and global dimension of ICETE 2009. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper evaluation method was used: each paper was reviewed by at least two experts from the International Program Committee, in a double-blind review process, and most papers had 3 reviews or more. In the end, 114 papers were selected for oral presentation and publication, corresponding to a 38% acceptance ratio. Of these only 34 were accepted as full papers (11% of submissions) and 80 as short papers. Additionally, 51 papers were accepted for poster presentation. These acceptance ratios demonstrate that ICETE 2009 continues to strive for achieving a high quality standard which we will keep and enhance in order to ensure the success of next year conference. Furthermore, a short list of about thirty papers will be selected to appear in a book that will be published by Springer. A successful conference involves more than paper presentations; it is also an opportunity for discussing new ideas about future research directions and other ventures. Therefore, a social event including a conference diner was planned for the evening of July 9 in order to promote further interaction between participants and social networking. We would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers presented at the conference, whose work made possible to put together a high quality program. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and reviewers, who helped us with their expertise, dedication and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution, sharing their vision and knowledge. Finally we must acknowledge and thank all the people on the secretariat and all other members of the organization, who were always very professional in dealing with all organisational issues and making this conference to happen as a result of a lot collaborative work. We hope that you will find these proceedings a valuable and helpful reference to your future work in the areas of e-business and telecommunications. (More)
