Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2015). This conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and has the “in cooperation” status with the following organizations: ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (ACM SIGAPP), ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP), Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly (APNNA), International Neural Network Society and Associazione Italiana per l'Intelligenza Artificiale (AIIA). The main goal of this conference is to encourage theory and practice to meet in a single venue. This is a challenging task, due to the increasing applications of pattern recognition theories and methods in a widening range of fields. Furthermore, in an equally increasing number of cases, multiple approaches are combined to solve difficult problems. As an example, automatic motion estimation for pilotless airplanes (drones) requires combining vision-based pattern recognition techniques with signals coming from different sensors. ICPRAM aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all areas of pattern recognition, to spur new research lines and provide the occasion to start novel collaborations. Contributions describing applications of pattern recognition techniques to real-world problems, interdisciplinary research, experimental and/or theoretical studies yielding new insights that advance pattern recognition methods are in the scope of ICPRAM. In many respects, there is still a frequent distance between theoretical and more application-oriented researchers. However, theory finds a significant testbed in practical applications, while any technological design must rely on solid theoretical foundations. We hope to support a fruitful exchange of expertise and opinions. ICPRAM received 151 paper submissions from 45 countries, which demonstrates the success and global appeal of this conference. From these submissions, 25 papers were published as full papers and 69 were published as short papers. These numbers, leading to a “full-paper” acceptance ratio of about 16% and an oral paper acceptance ratio close to 44%, show the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. The conference program includes a discussion panel and four invited talks by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Hanan Samet (University of Maryland, United States), Nello Cristianini (University of Bristol, United Kingdom), Marcello Pelillo (University of Venice, Italy) and Luis Alexandre (University of Beira Interior, Portugal). The ICPRAM program also includes a Doctoral Consortium on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods that brought together Ph.D. students within the pattern recognition field to discuss their research in an international forum. We would like to thank the Doctoral Consortium Chair, José Bioucas-Dias, for his collaboration in providing this added-value to ICPRAM. A "Best Paper Award" and a "Best Student Paper Award" will be given to the author(s) of a full paper presented at the conference. These will be selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined review marks, assessed by the Program Committee, and paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. As in previous editions of ICPRAM, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and on the quality of presentations, a short list of authors will be selected and invited to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of ICPRAM 2015. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to warmly thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, special thanks to all the members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration was fundamental for the success of this conference. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in Lisbon, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for the 5th ICPRAM, details of which will soon be available at http://www.icpram.org. (More)
