Foreword: This book includes the papers that have been accepted for presentation at the 7th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM 2018). ICPRAM is a series of annual conferences, sponsored by the “Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC)”, and endorsed by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). ICPRAM is organized “in cooperation” with: a number of international organizations involved in research related to Pattern Recognition: the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA), the Associação Portuguesa de Reconhecimento de Padrões (APRP), and the International Neural Network Society (INNS). The conference local partner for ICPRAM 2018 is Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI). The main goal of ICPRAM is to provide a common meeting forum for the latest research lines dealing with either theory or practice of the manifold branches of the general field of Pattern Recognition. During the conference, the attendees can meet and exchange ideas regarding their respective scientific achievements and future research plans, as well as establish new and original threads of collaboration to investigate brand new approaches. As a matter of fact, since its first edition, ICPRAM has gathered in a single venue researchers working on applications of pattern recognition techniques for the solution of real-world problems, as well as researchers whose theoretical studies provide new insights advancing pattern recognition methods, and scientists active in interdisciplinary research. In this way it represented, and we hope it still represents, an excellent opportunity for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all increasing and widening areas of Pattern Recognition. ICPRAM 2018 received 102 submissions, including the special session, from 33 countries. Out of the accepted papers, 29 were selected for oral presentation as full papers, 24 for oral presentation as short papers, and 30 as posters. It is easy to appreciate the variety of topics entailed, and we hope the choice carried out will provide interesting contents for the venue attendees. The technical program is complemented with the Special Session on INsights DiscovEry from LifElog Data (INDEED), which deals with topics spurring a very interesting research field. In order to testify the value of the best contributions, the conference organization has planned to assign three awards to be given during the conference: the Best Scientific Paper Award, the Best Student Paper Award and the Best Poster Award. The first two awards will be given to Author(s) of selected ICPRAM 2018 full papers. The winning papers will be chosen by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the combination of two elements: the best combined review marks, assessed by the Program Committee, and the paper presentation quality, assessed by Session Chairs at the conference venue. The best Poster Award will be given to the Authors of the most interesting poster among those corresponding to the top papers that were accepted for poster presentation. The winning poster will be selected by the Program/Conference Chairs. Besides the accepted contributions, as a further matter of interest and scientific growth, the conference program also includes a discussion panel and four invited talks by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Rita Cucchiara (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy), Edwin Hancock (York University, United Kingdom), Xiaoyi Jiang (University of Münster, Germany) and Alfred Bruckstein (Technion, Israel). Finally, we take the opportunity to thank the authors, all the members of the Program Committee and the additional reviewers, the invited speakers, and all members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration has been fundamental for the success of this conference. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for the 8th edition of ICPRAM, details of which will soon be available at http://www.icpram.org. (More)
