Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Model-Driven Engineering and Software Development (MODELSWARD 2016), which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). MODELSWARD 2016 is sponsored by INSTICC (the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication) and held in cooperation with AIS Special Interest Group on Modeling and Simulation (AIS SIGMAS) and The Open Group - SOA Work Group. MODELSWARD was technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE CS), IEEE Technical Committee on Business Informatics and Systems (IEEE CS - TCBIS) and Technical Council on Software Engineering (IEEE CS - TCSE). The Conference Program comprises oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in eight technical sessions. We are proud to inform that the program also includes three plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Manfred Broy (Technische Universität München, Germany), Paola Inverardi (Università dell'Aquila, Italy) and Lionel Briand (Université du Luxembourg, Luxembourg). The conference also contained two thematic sessions organized by prominent researchers in the area of Model-Driven Engineering: Learning Modeling in Complex Organizations (LMCO) and Model-Driven Enterprise Services and Applications for a Sustainable Interoperability: New Paradigms for Development in the Future Enterprise – 2nd edition (MDE4SI), one workshop on ‘domAin specific Model-based AppRoaches to vErificaTion and validaTiOn’ (AMARETTO), two tutorials: ‘Applying Model Driven Engineering Technologies in the Creation of Domain Specific Modeling Languages’ and ‘How to implement Domain-Specific Modeling Languages: Hands-on’ and two demonstrations on: ‘Modeling security with TTool and SysML-Sec’ and ‘MetaEdit+: Tool support for collaborative and concurrent metamodeling and modeling’. MODELSWARD 2016 had also an Industrial Track, involving prominent industrial experts with extensive domain experience in applying Model-Driven Engineering in industrial practice, comprising a panel and oral presentations. In addition, there was a Doctoral Consortium where PhD candidates could present the research work they were developing in their studies. MODELSWARD 2016 received 118 paper submissions from 38 countries, covering all continents. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee members, who are highly qualified researchers in the MODELSWARD topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, in the main conference only 22 papers were selected as full papers resulting in a full paper acceptance ratio of 21%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve the high quality of this event, which we expect to improve even further in the years to come. A short list of papers presented at the congress were selected for publication of extended and revised versions in the CCIS Series book by Springer and in the International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design by IGI Global. All papers presented at this conference were available at the SciTePress Digital Library shortly after the event. Conferences are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks, the conference included in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of February 20, 2016. We would like to express our gratitude to all the people who contributed to MODELSWARD 2016. First of all to the authors, whose quality work has been essential for this conference; second to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. We are sure that all the attendees participated in an inspiring conference and had an unforgettable stay in the Eternal City of Rome, Italy. (More)
