Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Model-Driven Engineering and Software Development (MODELSWARD 2013), which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). MODELSWARD 2013 is sponsored by INSTICC (the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication) and held in cooperation with SIGMAS (Association for Information Systems - Special interest Group on Modeling and Simulation). The Conference Program includes oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in six sessions: “Model management”, “Transformations” and “Domain-Specific Languages”, “Verification, Validation and Testing” and “Transformations and Applications”. We are proud to inform that the program includes also two plenary keynote lectures given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Oscar Pastor (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain) and Stephen Mellor (Freeter, United Kingdom). MODELSWARD received 76 paper submissions from 32 countries, in all continents. To evaluate each submission, a blind paper review was performed by at least three members of the Program Committee, who are highly qualified researchers in MODELSWARD topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, only 31 papers were selected for oral presentation (8 full papers and 23 short papers) and 16 papers were selected for poster presentation. The full paper acceptance ratio was 11%, and the total oral acceptance ratio (including full papers and short papers) 45%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. Conferences are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks, the Conference includes in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of February 20th. Firstly of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time.
