Foreword: On behalf of the organizing committee, we welcome you to GRAPP 2008, the 3rd International Conference on Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, co-organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Communication and Control (INSTICC) and the University of Madeira and in collaboration with Eurographics. This conference aims at becoming a major point of contact between researchers, engineers and practitioners in Computer Graphics. In the third year of this venue the conference program includes five keynote lectures and a Panel where all the Keynote Speakers will discuss “Challenges and Opportunities for Computer Graphics and Computer Vision”. The conference is organised in four plenary sessions where full papers will be presented and four parallel sessions to present the short papers and posters in order to give the widest possible view on this technical area. Furthermore, two special sessions, one on Art Science and Technology, and another on Multimedia Collaborative Virtual Environments have been arranged. We expect the technical program, that approaches areas like “Geometry & Modelling”, “Rendering”, “Animation & Simulation” or “Interactive Environments”, to appeal to a global audience of engineers, scientists, and business people interested in the research topics of GRAPP. We hope that the proceedings here published, demonstrate new and innovative solutions, and highlight technical problems in each field that are challenging and worthwhile. We received a high number of paper submissions for this third edition of GRAPP, 87 in total, with contributions from all five continents which attest to the success and global dimension of GRAPP.To evaluate each submission, we used a double-blind evaluation method and each paper was reviewed by at least three experts from the International Program Committee. In the end, 29 papers were selected for oral presentation and for publication as full papers, 29 papers were accepted for short presentation and 14 were accepted for poster presentation. The result was a fullpaper acceptance ratio below 34% and a high-quality program that is attractive to experts from Computer Graphics area. We hope that these Conference Proceedings, indexed by ISI Proceedings, DBLP and INSPEC, may help the Computer Graphics community to find interesting research work. Furthermore, a short list of about 10 papers will be selected to be expanded into a forthcoming book of VISIGRAPP Selected Papers to be published by Springer during 2008. Also, expanded versions of selected papers will be published in the Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting. In order to promote the development of professional networks the organizing committee has prepared a Welcome Drink on January 22nd and a Conference Dinner in the evening of January 24th (Thursday). We hope that you enjoy this exciting conference and have an unforgettable stay in the beautiful city of Funchal. Finally, we would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers, whose work and dedication make possible to put together a program that we believe very exciting and of high technical quality. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for sharing their vision in their talks. Special thanks should be addressed to the INSTICC Steering Committee, especially Bruno Encarnação and Marina Carvalho, whose invaluable work made possible this event. We wish you all an exciting conference and an unforgettable stay in Funchal. We hope to meet you again for the 4th edition of GRAPP, in December of current year in Lisbon, details of which will be shortly available at http://www.grapp.org. (More)
