Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Photonics, Optics and Laser Technology (PHOTOPTICS 2017) which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). PHOTOPTICS 2017 was held in in cooperation with the Photonics21, the Spanish Optical Society (SEDOPTICA), the European Optical Society (EOS), the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF), the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) and the L'AFOP. It was technically sponsored by the IEEE Photonics Society and the Science and Technology Events (SCITEVENTS) was the Logistics Partner. The Conference Program included oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in three simultaneous tracks: “Optics”, “Photonics” and “Lasers”. We are proud to announce that the program included also three plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely – José Luís Santos (Universidade do Porto, Portugal), Jean–Luc Adam (Université de Rennes 1, France) and David J. Richarson (University of Southampton, United Kingdom). PHOTOPTICS received 104 paper submissions from 30 countries. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified researchers in PHOTOPTICS topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, 20 papers were selected as full papers which led to a full paper acceptance ratio of 19%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. A short list of papers presented at the conference venue will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a book published by Springer Series in Optical Sciences Series or in a special issue of Optics Communications Journal published by Elsevier. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Conferences are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the Conference included in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of February 28th, 2017. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. The organization distributed three paper awards sponsored by the Europhysics Letters (EPL) at the conference closing session. A "Best Paper Award", "Best Student Paper Award" and a “Best Poster Award” was conferred to the author(s) of a full paper presented at the conference, selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, assessed by the Program Committee, and paper presentation quality, assessed by session chairs at the conference venue.
